A MODERN BLUEBEARD.-Dr. William
D. Potts, alias Duval!, an old resident
of Newark, N. J., bas been convicted of
the murder of bjs fourth wife, at James?
ville, Wisconsin, and sentenced to im?
prisonment for life, the severest punish?
ment that can be inflicted under the laws
of Wisconsin. The convicted villain
is a Jerseyman by birth, having been
bora in the Southern part of the Stale,
near Trenton, where his family was well
connected. In his early life he was a
clergyman, and at the age of fourteen
was known as "the boy preacher."
News from South America by steamer
is dated from Rio Janeiro, February 23.
The long promised return of the army
sent into Paraguay, or at least all that is
left of it, hos at length taken place. The
dreadful sufferings of the Brazilians may
be judged from the fact that out of 5,000
men who left Brazil for Paraguay, only
1,459 have returned. It is estimated
that fully three-fourths of the Brazilian
army have perished in Paraguay. And
yet the war against Lopez is not ended.
How much longer will this fruitless war
continue?

Tho Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta
Railroad Company having been formed
by the consolidation of the Charlotte and
South Carolina and the Columbia aud
Augusta Railroad, and having executed
a lirst and only mortgage on its entire
property of 195 miles, including equip
ment, is now redeeming all tho bonds
formerly issued by said two companies
by an exchaage of ils first mortgage
bonds. These bonds bear seven pei
cent, interest, payable in Juunary and
July, and are amply secured by a mort?
gage on property which cost per mile
more than three times the amount of
bonds BO issued.
The present price of the stock and the
business of the rond give ample guaran?
tee of the security of the obligations for
a permanent investment. Indeed thc
opinion is freely expressed, that there is
no safer bonds issued by any party or
corporation in tho State, and they are
oheerfully commended to capitalists as a
safe investment.
For the purpose of funding the floating
debt of the Company, $50,000 of these
bonds are offered for sale to the public,
at the Treasurer's Office in Columbia.
