It says: Its only claim to notice is, that a colored Senator spoke it, and not som? second or third rate Northern member or carpet-bagger. It bears the signs of haying been written to please Sumner, Nye and other radicals of the Senate, under whose exclusive protection Bevels has ohosen to place himself, and whoso condescending patronage will hereafter, in all probability, bo rewarded with his vote. No man bas ever missed a better chance than Senator Bevels has lost of greatly distinguishing himself. Ho had bot to.balance bis eulogy of the black race hy a tribute of justice and kindness to tho unreconstructed white, and come oat boldly and frankly for the Bingham amendment, or some other modification of the harsh terms of tho Georgia bill, to have stamped himself as a man of broad sympathies and statesmanlike views. Sumner and the rest wonld have raged at this, but they would bnve come to recognize his individuality and self responsibility, and would at last have respected him more than they will now that he bas thrown himself unreservedly into their arms. By his docile acqui? escence in tbo schemes of the radical Senate ring ho hos purchased some temporary advantages, but has lost one of the finest chances of nn honorable ambition that ever fell to tho lot of any man. On Tuesday, tho PHONIX reached its fifth anniversary. It had its origin in the ashes of Columbia, and with a sub? lime confidence in a future of restored prosperity for that onco beautiful and flourishing city, adopted the name of the fabled bird which found a new and vigorous life in tho funeral fires of its old existence. The promise is not yet fulfilled, so far as the city is concerned, though it is making steudy progress in that, direction. But the PHONIX has be? come a fixed institution, and hy itu very name is a daily remiudcr, both to the oity and the State, that it is the duty of every citizen to labor for the restoration of South Carolina to its ancient honor and prosperity.-Yorhville Enquirer. ISRAELITES IN NEW YORK.-It is stated there are more Israelites in New York city than in the Holy Land, or in all Syria. There are about 70,000 in that city, and this is probably a larger num? ber than now inhabit the Scripture lands above mentioned. Of that 70,000 there are not 1,000 that can justly be called poor, while the majority are heavy own? ers of real estate, and also among the most aotive and enterprising of the com? mercial people. CHINA GRASS.-The Southern States are beginning to cultivate China grass, to be nsed as ? substitute for silk. A ma? chine and process for its preparation have already been patented. Tho Lou? isiana planters have raised the most of this grus?, but they sell it in Loudon, where it is worked into what are called Japanese silks. MORE EARTHQUAKES IN GERMANY. The North-German correspondent says that the earthquake shocks in Groxs Geran, after a temporary lull, are again becoming alarming. Between the '20th and 28th of February ten distinct shocks were felt, besides subterraneous thun? dering and rolling repeated at least twenty times. Solon Bobinson is in tho agricultural business in Florida. The lost thing he planted was a piece of lend and a nig? ger. The poor down-trodden African is receiving a warm reception at the hands of his friends. Ku Klux. State Dental Association. SOME doubt having been expressed as to the success of the Stato Doutai Associa lion, formed in Columbia during the week of the Agricultural Fair, upon the ground that sufficient notice had not been extended to the profusion throughout the state, the members of the Association then formed do, therefore, wave all former action, and hereby extend un earnest invitation to tho members of tho pro? fession in Mouth Carolina to meet in Columbia, onTUESOAY, April 5ih. at 8 o'clock P. M., for the formation of a Dental Association that will embrace all sections of the State. The Southern Dental Association meets in New Orleans on tho 13th of April noxt.
