FORTUNES OF JULIET CLAYBURN.

CHAPTER LI-MEETING.
Rudolph went up to .their private
parlor. Mr. Clayburn and Mrs. Thur?
low were seated within, but Juliet was
not there-she was dressing for dinner.
"This is fortunate," said Rudolph
entering and quietly closing the door;
"I was afraid Juliet would be here and
I would have no ohance of telling you
the news privately. Uncle Karl is here
and is very impatient to see her, but I
dared not bring him up until she was \
prepared." 1
Mr. Clayburn and his sister were both
excited at the intelligence.
"What explanation does he give of his
conduct?" asked the gentleman. "If
not a satisfactory one, he shall not see
her."
"He was in perfect ignorance of all
that has transpired," Rudolph said,
hurriedly; "Aunt Clnyburn's death-in
short, everything. Ho thought Juliet
-waa married. There has been some
fool play-foul play, Unole Clayburn.
Somebody has intercepted these letters,
and-"
"There she comes," interrupted Mr.
Clayburn, as some one paused at the
door.
"Who will tell her?" whispered Ru?
dolph.
"leu must yourself," replied Mr.
Clayburn, preparing to leave the room.
Juliet entered.
"You all look aa if you were hatching
a conspiracy, or concoting a gun-powder
plot," she remarked, smiling.
"Ontheoontrary," answered Rudolph.
"We were only calculating the length of
time required by a fashionable young
lady of the nineteenth century to per?
form her dinner toilet," and then laugh?
ing and consulting his watch, he pro?
ceeded in a tone of mock seriousness,
"only three hours, forty-five minutes
and fifteen seconds 1 Uncle Clayburn,

nary swiftness in dressing!"
"Aren't you ashamed, Rudolph," said
Juliet. "Upon my word, father, I've
only been in my room an hour and a
half. I can bring forward aunt's testi?
mony to the fact."
"Yes," responded Mrs. Thurlow.
"You're a pert boy, Rudolph, and de?
serve castigation for your numer?os im?
pertinences. Give it to him, Juliet."
"I'll leave him to be punished by the
workings of his own conscience," she
replied.
Rudolph was pacing up and down the
room, at a loss to know how to take the
iniatire in the delicate operation en?
trusted to his skill. At last he threw
himself yawningly on the sofa, ventur?
ing the remark:
"I'll be bound nobody can guess
whom I saw on Broadway to-day."
Juliet looked at him, seemed struok
with some expression about bis face, and
tnrniug deadly pale, cried:
"Who? Who?"
Rudolph jumped up and supported
her.
"Now, Juliet," he said, "if you act in
this way, I deolare I will stop talking to
you altogether. Every day you frighten
me almost to death. I cannot say a
word but you catch at something hidden
and misapprehend my meaning."
"It ia very weak, I know, Rudolph.
I strive against it with all my might,
bat I cannot help being excitable.
After next month," she whispered, "I
think I will overcome it entirely."
Having placed her on a seat, Rudolph
remained beside her? and presently made
a second venture:
"Juliet, be perfectly cool and serene,
and I'll tell you something I heard
this morning."
"About-about Karl?" gasped Juliet.
"Look at you, again," said Rudolph,
in assumed vexation; "is that what you
call being calm? I'll not open my lipB
to yon again."
"But I will be calm," said Juliet,
making a violent effort to appear so.
"If you will only tell me; I promise you
I will."
"Lie down, then," commanded Ro?
dolph, "and let me fix this sofa cushion
under your head. Now, remember if I
see you getting in the least excited or
pale, I'll stop instantly."
After a little pause, ehe said in quito
a steady voice:
"Now, I am ready."
Watching her fuco, Rudolph began
"This morning, Juliet, I heard some?
thing about-"
"About Karl," suggested Juliet.
"Yes, about Unelo Karl. Can you

. "Yes, I can, indeed. I am prepared
to endure everything except-except-"
"It is nothing bad," Rudolph hastened
to say; "nothing bad, Juliet. Just the
contrary-all good. He still loves you

letter after letter, begging you to explain
yonr cruel silence, but he hasn't received
a line from you in two years. He thought

"Is he coming, Rudolph?"

"Very soon?"
"Very soon, indeed."
"Will you tell me when?"
"The vessel is expected into port every
day. It is due this afternoon."
"Thank God! Ob, thank God!"
The tender tears were flowing softly.
Suddenly, she took her handkerchief
from her face and asked
"Are you sure what you say is true,
Rudolph? Are you certain I am still
dear to him? Who told you?"
Rudolph was taken unawares, and hav?
ing no smooth answer prepared, stam?
mered out
"I met-that is, I saw-in fact-"
"1 know!" exclaimed Juliet, a radiant
joy breaking over her face; "Karl told
you-you have seen him-ho ia here!"
"Yes, he is here, in this very build?
ing, waiting to seo yon."
"Lot him come to me," sho said wild?
ly; "make haste, Rudolph-my heart
will burst with its great joy."
"If you grow BO excited," expostulat?
ed Rudolph, "I will be sorry I told you,
and if you aro not composed he cannot
put his foot in the room. He will not
run the risk of making you sick again
by over-excitement."
"No, no," she said, struggling with
herself; "I will bo oalm, but let him
come."
"Very well; take good care of her,
grand-mother, nntil I bring Uncle Karl."
Rudolph found his uncle, in the same
attitude he had left him-standing near
the fire-place, his bowed head resting on
his arms. As Rudolph entered, he raised
his face.
"Dear me!" exclaimed Rudolph, "how
dismal yon look! More like a man stand?
ing over his sweetheart's grave, than a
fellow who has just found his lost angel.
What makes you so. doleful?"
Karl made no reply. Rudolph re?
garded him silently for a moment, and
then springing toward him said:
"Uncle Karl! Is it-can it be possi?
ble, that you have learned to-to-to
love another during this separation?"
"Love another!" cried Karl, almost
angrily. "Pshaw! But do you expect
me to have no feeling? It is enough to
make me wretched, truly miserable,
when I think how much she has suffered
on my account."
"Don't think about that," said Ru?
dolph. "It does no good to cry over
old troubles. Cheer up! She is prepared
and anxious to see you. Could you have
seen the look of joy which illuminated
her face when I told her you were here
that it was all a misunderstanding-that
you still loved her-you would not doubt
your capacity to make ber forget the
trials of the past."
In the meantime, Juliet continued to
wait in a state of intenso expectation.
Uer agitation increased every moment,
notwithstanding the efforts of her father
and aunt to preserve her calmness. She
trembled-her eyes swam in tears, Iben
her face became sad-anon joyous, she
smiled and wept by turns, and her heart
fluttered like a tremulous leaf, with soft
delight. At last, foot-steps were heard.
"It is Karl's step, father."
She arose, walked nearly to the door,
and then stopped. The door opened.
Karl sprang toward her. She uttered a
faint cry, and fell senseless in bia arms.
He laid her tenderly on the sofa, and
hung over her with passionate words of
endearment. Mrs. Thurlow drew him
away. She was prepared with a large
fan, several bottles of cologne, sal vola?
tile, and all the et cetera. They bathed
her white forehead, chafed her hands,
and kept ap a brisk fanniug, but for a
long time she showed no signs of resus?
citation. The syncope was the longest
she bad ever had. Mr. Clayburn wrung
his baodu in dismay.
"I believo you have killed my child
