X FEBR.-About noon yesterday, onr citi
^S^ens ?ere startled by the alarm of fire,
?wrhich was found to proceed from the
Sumter Academy building. The two
fire companies were soon on the spot,
and did all in their power to save the
building, but owing to a laok of water,
the greater part of the building and the
roof were destroyed, only a part of the
frame being saved. The building was
occupied, for several months past, as a
free school for white children.
NEUuo KILLED.-Last Friday, a negro
man fell from a load of cotton, four or
five miles from town, and the wheel
passing over his head completely crushed
it, killing him instantly.-Sumter News.
ACCIDENTS.-Yesterday, a colored man
named Jack Flood, while at work npon
the steeple of the new German Church,
opposite the Citadol, slipped and fell to
the ground, receiving serious injuries.
As he was falling, he managed to catch
hold of a rope, and partially broke his
fall. But for this he would have been
instantly killed. It is thought that his
injuries will result fatally.
A white man, whose name we could
not learn, Lad the fingers of his right
hand cat off, yesterday, by the ma?
chinery at Claassen's mill.

BANKBTJPTOY.-Since the Bankrupt Act
was passed, 538 persons have taken ad?
vantage of it in the Seoond and Third
Congressional Districts, of whom 350
have been discharged. For the last year
there have been several involuntary
bankrupts, and bat one voluntary bank?
rupt.
STATE COUKT.-When the Court met
yesterday, it was informed of the death
of the Hon. W. F. DeSaussure, and,
after brief eulogistic remarks from
Messrs. Simons, Phillips and Yeadon, it
adjourned os a mark of respect to the
deceased.-Charleston News.
APPOINTMENT.-We learn that F. G.
DeFontaine, Esq., has received the ap
