We have to be careful all the time to
avoid everything which might surprise
or shook her."
"Is her mother dead?" inquired Karl,
mournfully.
"Oh! Uncle Karl, where have yon
been that you are ignorant of all these
things. When Juliet left her father's
house at that dreadful time, the excite?
ment and grief was too mnch for Mrs.
Clayburn. She died a few days after
her daughter's return home, and that
was why Juliet became so sick. She
said she had murdered her mother.
Nobody thought it possible for her to
live. She was in bed more than two
mon thu, and it was another month before
she ever left ber room."
"Ob, Lord! ob, Lord!" groaned Karl.
"How awful! awful!"
"Undo Karl," whispered Rudolph,
"you must really restrain your feelings
and control yoarself. I see people
staring at you. They will think you
crazy, sure enough."
Karl paid no attention whatever to the
words-he bad not beard them.
"But why did ehe leave her father's
house?" be asked.
"It was all for your sake. Her father
tried to force her into marrying Frank
Clayburn. She refused. He then gave
her tho choice either to resign you en?
tirely, or to leave his house-to consider
herself disinherited, and never again to
darken his door. She chose the latter
alternative."
"She actually quitted home?" cried
Karl.
"Yes," and Rudolph proceeded to give
a minute account of all those unhappy
details with whioh tho reader is already
acquainted.
"My sweet angel!" said Karl, "to
think she should have suffered BO much
for me. Would God I had known it!
Rudolph, my burden is heavier than I
can bear!"
"Fortunately you will not be cafled
upon to bear it much longer," remarked
Rndolph, with a radiant face. "I hope
soon to 8eeyou both happy."
"But do you think Julie can ever
sufficiently forget the trials of the past
to be happy again?"
"I have found a magician," replied
Rudolph, "who, I am suro, will be ublo
to make ber forget them."
"Why did you not write me about all
thiB?" asked Karl. "It was unkind in
you, Rudolph It was not what I ex?
pected at your hands. You might have
spared me a whole life of misery."
"I havo felt all tho time that I was
not doing my duty toward you," said
Rudolph; "but you know I told you
how at first Juliet begged me not Bto
write, because she dbl not wish your
mind disturbed abouMfhe ring. After?
ward she was more bitterly opposed to it
than ever; for, with all hor love, she has
a proud heart. She would allow no in?
vestigation of your conduct, and told me
once she was a beggar for no man's love,
and wonld never forgive me if I ever
mentioned ber name to you in any way.
Grand-mother says Juliet believes some
one else has taken her place in your
affections; bat I soe you love her still;
so it is unnecessary to ask any questions
on that matter."
Probably Karl thought, also, it wonld
bo unnecessary to make any useless
usROveratlo'iH on tho aforesaid subject.
