WASHINGTON, March 15.-The iron?
clad oath was exaoted from Strong, as
reliminary to his being seated. The
Georgia question will probably occupy
the remainder of the week.
The House took the funding bill from
the table, and a contest is now progress?
ing as to its proper reference.
The House debated at length whether
to refer the funding bill to the Banking
and Currency or to the Ways and Means
Committee, and finally voted to refer it
to the latter.
Butler reported a bill for the admis?
sion of Texas, stating that it was identi?
cal with the Virginia and Mississippi
bills, with the exception of an additional
provision-that its passage shall not
affect the conditions under which Texas
was originally admitted. In response to
an additional proviso, offered by Wood,
that the State be admitted without
qualification, except as stated in the bili,
Butler said he had no objection, except
that it was useless.
Beck also offered a substituto bill, re?
citing that the Texas constitution was
Republican in form, and is entitled to
representation. Both Wood's and Beck's
amendments were rejected by n party
vote, and the bill then passed.
The deficiency bill was then discussed.
During the discussion, Farnsworth said
two of the granite contractors for the
Charleston Custom House, and the
Treasury extension, w6ro two men who
had contracts in connection with the
New York post office-Messrs. Lamed Sc
Dixon-and remarked that they again
had their arms elbow deep in the Trea?
sury. Without disposition of the bill,
recess was taken.
The Senate passed the House resolu?
tion of giving Stanton's widow one year's
salary. A resolution was offered direct?
ing an inquiry whether the fifteenth
amendment conferred suffrage on In?
dians. Thurman objected, saying that
its ratification had not yet been pro?
claimed.
The Senato Foreign Relations Commit?
tee agreed to recommend the rejeotion of
the San Domingo treaty, by a vote of five
to two.
In the Senate, the Quakers petition for
money to carry ont their Indian views.
Sumner desires an appropriation for a
mixed college at Xenia, Ohio. The Ju?
diciary Committee were directed to re?
port regarding the status of the Indians
under the fifteenth amendment. ? reso?
lution for a Joint Indian Committee was
defeated by tho casting vote of Colfax.
The Georgia bill was resumed, when an
amendment was offered, authorizing the
President to send troops into the States

The Can-can was inaugurated at the
Metropolitan Music Hall, Memphis, on
Monday night, with the celebrated
Aline Le F??vr? ns the principal "star."
Af ter the "first edition" had been suc?
cessfully gone through with several
members of the moral police force ap?
peared on the scene and captured the
gay, festive and versatile Aline and ber
attendant curyphees, Miss St. Audley,
Miss Katie Sharp and Miss Clare. The
proprietor of the establishment, Mr.
James Schooles, was also arrested. All
put up forfeits, aud on Tuesday morn?
ing appeared before the recorder to
answer the charge of giving an indecent
exhibition. Schooles was fined $40, Le
Favre $30, St. Audley and Katie Sharp
$25 each and Miss Clare, for being the
most modest in tho crowd, only $10.
The fines were paid, under protest, and
an appeal taken to a higher court.
In the afternoon Mr. Schooles obtained
an inj unction from Judge Fonte, of the
municipal court, to restrain the police
authorities from interfering with the
performance of 'the great original
French Can-can."
Mr. Wm. Hendricks, living some six
miles from Jackson, Miss., on the Ray?
mond Hoad, was, on Saturday night,
shot and supposed mortally wounded by
an assassin. Mr. H. was in bed and
heard a call at his gate, when he arose
and went to his front door. Upon his
stepping outside, tho party who bad
called ?poko to bim. Mr. H. thought
he recognized the voice of a man who
had sworn to kill him, and immediately
stepped back, and was iu the act of
closing the door between him and the
party outside, when he received a charge
of buckshot in his breast.
At a religious installation in Kansas,
the other day, the minister, who was
from Missouri, and who gave the right
hand of fellowship to him who was in?
stalled, took occasion to say that he was
"from the borne of the bushwhackers,"
and his friend "lived in the State of the
jayhawkers. We bushwhacked you and
yon jaybawked us." Therefore, "I give
you the right hand of Christian fellow?

bidder, at publio auction, the property of the
said Laurens Railroad Company, described as
follows: The Railroad of the said Company,
running from Newborry villago to Laurens
ville, including tho road-bed, right of way and
lands occupied by or belonging to the said
Company, together with tho several toper*
structurcs and tracks thereon, and all rails
and other materials used on tho same, and
all and singular the several bridges, viaducts
culverts, fences, dopot grounds and buddings
thereon, station-houses, work-shops, engines,
tenders, cars, tools, materials and machinery,
equipments and appurtenances of every kind,
and all the stock subscribed for in the said
Company, and all other property belonging,
appertaining to, or in any manner conneotod
with or forming a part of the said Laurens
Railroad Company, and all franchises, rights
and privileges of the said Laurens Railroad
Company, of, in, to, or concerning tho same.
And upon such salo all equity of redemption
in the said premises shall be forever barred
and absolntely foreclosed.
