Clayborn's whereabouts, and his mode

gentleman was stationed, according to
agreement, just outside the door, listen?
ing to the interview on whioh so much
depended.

good to take a ride this afternoon?" asked
Juliet.
"No doubt of it," was the reply, "it is
just the thing he needs. An excellent
way, too, of inaugurating your improved
line of tactics; but I doubt very much if
you can induce him to accompany you,
he has been left to himself solong."
These last words excited Juliet to such
a pitch, she arose immediately, Baying,
in something like her old way,
"I'll order the carriage this minute,
and persuade him to go."
She reached the bell and gave it au
impatient jerk, which made a peal re?
sounding all over the house. Hetty was
electrified at the sound.
"Dat's Missie's bell, ringed as it used
to bin," she remarked to the cook, and,
jumping up, she made all speod to tho
house, on the hall stairs passing Mr.
Glayburn, who, at tbis.interesting crisis,

Hetty, with a knowing smile, brought
the hat and cloak, and left the room.

honr ago, in obedience to Mrs. Thur?
lo w's commands. Juliet stood at the
glass, putting on her hat.
"Well, certainly, aunt, I do look fright
ful. with my hair cropped off in this
hideous style, and my skin liko plaster of
Poris."
Mrs. Thurlow could not refrain a
smile-her ruse had succeeded admira?
bly! She felt convinced, if she could
just get her woman's vanity uppermost
again, and, flourishing in its pristine
glory, there would be no difficulty in
persuading her niece to tarry contentedly
for a little while yet among terrestrial
scenes. As they wore starting down thc
steps, Master Rudolph opportunely made
his appearance, bowing and scraping
equal to a Frenohman, and begging her
to be allowed tho honor of escorting her
down stairs. Even with his support, she
had to catch the baluster, and was so ex?
hausted with the unwonted exercise when
they reached tho bottom, Mrs. Thurlow
had to give her an arm on the other sido.
"1 have been so lazy," said ktho sick
girl, in an excusing tone, apologizing for
her weakness, as if it wero a criminal
offence. "Bot I'll soon got strong agaiu,
and be able to walk much better. Poor
father! I expect he is frightfully weak."
"Yes," agreed Mrs. Thurlow, where?

These words seemed to convict Juliet ;
she looked at her aunt with a sorrowful
expression, as if she could never forgive
herself for so long neglecting her sick
father. .
That day was the turning point-she
began to improve rapidly, and her mind
gradually recovered its heathf ul tone and
vigor. Her father became the absorbing J
interest of life. Devoting herself to his
pleasure and comfort, always arranging
some plan to entertain and amuse him;
always striving to make him forget tho
past; in a measure, she forgot it herself,
and slowly regained, if not her own
cheerfulness and sunshine of heart, at
least a semblance of them. Her disinte?
rested devotion, her unselfish efforts in
behalf of another, like all genuine good?
ness, ponied a rich harvest of blessings
on her own head. Self-sacrifice was the
sweet draught of oblivion, for which she
had so earnestly prayed the Lethean
stream, whoso silent waves washed away
sad and bitter memories, bringing peace
to her troubled soul. And Mr. Clay?
burn, pampered with the indulgence of
power, became the veriest tyrant on the
globe. He seemed to know instinctively
when the poor girl, overpowered with
feelings of remembrance, which she
could not always restrain, fled to the
sol-tudo of her own chamber to take a ?
quiet cry over Karl's picture, or to read
over again the faded letters, now worn
and blistered with her tears. At such
times, there always came an imperative
call from her father. We are not given
to suspicion, but we verily believe Hetty
was employed as a spy on her young
mistress moods, and faithfully reported
all unlawful proceedings, such as tears
or melanohly repinings. Bo this as it
may. Juliet's unemployed or solitary mo?
ments were few and far between. If she
had been very sentimental, some one
may suggest, she might have enjoyed the
luxury of crying herself to sleep every
night, saying with the Psalmist, "I am
weary with my groaning; all the night
make I my bed to swim; I water my
couch with my tears;" but the fact is,
after a day of hard labor with mental and j
physical toil, sleep comes more naturally
and sweetly to the eyes than anything
else. Which may account physiologi?
cally and satisfactorily for Juliet's fre?
quent omission of even a single sigh, in
tho short interview which elapsed be?
tween the time when her head touched
tho pillow and her soft and regular
breathing proclaimed the faot that she

as to make its insoluble phosphato soluble in water, and thus mado capable of being taken up
by growing plants. Tho insoluble Phosphate found in any commercial Fertilizer is of no

Soluble Phosphate which any Fertilizer contains, the less tho quantity required per acre, and
consequently tho cheapest Fertilizer is that containing the highest "per centage of Voluble
Phosphate.
Impressed with these truths, the Sulphuric Acid and Super-Phosphato Company have erected
at Charleston, the first extensive Acid Chambers South of Baltimore, and aro able tu ofter to
planters the highest per centage of Soluble Phosphato of Lime known in any market.
