EASTERN EXTRAVAGANCE.-IQ the diary
of the Hon. Hrs. William Grey, who
traveled in Turkey and Egypt in the
sniio of the Princess of Wales, she has
placed some facts and figures in a more
appreciable shape than other travelers
had done. In one of the Eastern palaces
which the lady visited, the bedsteads
were of silver, and cost each $15,000.
The rojal bankrupt who owns them, is
alwaye in the loan market. The three
chief dresses of the daughter of the
Viceroy of Egypt, recently married, cost
36,000 apiece, and of course, other mat?
ters of mere show were in like propor?
tion. The expenses of the wedding
wero fixed at $200,000, exclusive of
dresses and silver bedsteads. The same
amount was provided for fire-works and
display, and presenta to the slaves and
populace. But all the extravagance is
not lavished on the women. Men who
encourage waste in the other sex aro al?
ways ready enough to throw away money
on their own follies. The Viceroy of
Egypt has treasuries of pipes, some of
them costing no less than $30,000 apieoe.
He provided the party of the Prince of
Wales with an assortment of these pipes,
and twenty slaves were in attendance to
keep the pipes aforesaid clean and in
order. The Arabian Nights aro pleasant
reading, and have hitherto been regard?
ed aa fiction. If these latter acoounts
are true, there must be more facts than
we have supposed in the "Nights."
