THAT MIDDLE PARTY A DELUSION.
There are those who profess to BOO a
growing regard for truth and fair dealing
among the radical press, bnt it is only a
faint glimmer as yet, tue end is far off.
The spoils are too great and too rich for
them to yield one jot or tittle; nor can
we look for truth where no truth exists.
On this faint glimmer, it is thought to
build a hope and t o work a change in the
opposition, by a chango of party name.
Bat it is a delusion, "tho baseless fabric
of a dream," and can result in no possi?
ble good. No middle course, no new
party name, we think advisable or ad?
missible in the present crisis. Let the
dead past be dead, will do, in a measure,
for to fight some of the dead issues cnn
effect nothing; but we cannot give np
the sentiment, nor eschew the good old
Democratic banner under which the
South is gathered. We cannot afford to
give it up, and mast fight the issue bold?
ly and defiantly, squarely standing to the
front. A middle party, and that there
will be such, it is to be feared, must ul?
timately merge into one or the other of
the two great parties, and those two must
and will be D?mocratie and Republican.
How solid and well drilled aro the pha?
lanxes of the latter! "With them, it is
life or death. Equally must we be
strong and determined and united. With
the Richmond Enquirer and Examiner,
we exclaim, "let the trumpets sound!"
Let the banner be Democratic. Not the
dead post, but the live present is the is?
sue; honor, honesty and right, against
dishonor, theft and wrong. Qood men
and trne men against bad men and trai?
tors-men who will sacrifice co tin try and
their hope of Heaven, if that hope was
still theirs, to carry their ends and hold
their deluded followers to their car
wheels. Carpet-baggers from-Heaven
only knows whore-the lees and scour
ings of a society which permitted them
not to remain in the lam?n which unfor?
tunately gave them birth, but cast them
forth, and who have fallen as fire-brands
among honest people. Of these, we
would be rid, and of their work. Yes,
there must be a change, but let it not be
in the Democratic party or name. Tho
General and State Governments must be
changed and their Augean stables deaned
out. We are tired of, and never can get
used to, the "results" of Republicanism.

For pure strategy commend us to an
Indiana lover. At New Albany, a lover
was refused permission to see his Sarah
Jane, and was watched by the old folks
and a bull-dog. Now, what did ho do
bnt go to the house armed with another
dog, set the two to fighting, and while
the old people were betting on their dog,
he just took the girl out the back door,
and before the fight was over, ho had
her all married as snug as possible. Tally
one for the Hoosier.
A citizen of Cedar Falls, Iowa, had
such faith in a chemical fire engine, that
he set fire to a house, just for the fun of
phtting it out. He charged on the fire
with his machine, when it refused to I
squirt, and the houso went right on
burning and wouldn't wait. You can
bny that engine for fifty cents on a dol?
lar. Perhaps that man ain't sick.
RICHNESS.-The New York Times has
a Washington correspondent who lately
took a survey of the United States Se?
nate. All or nearly all of the radical
members are pronounced "pure," "ho?
nest," "honorable," "faithful." Would
to God, then, they were impure, disho?
nest and everything elso snnpo9ed to be
bad!
The town of Springfield, Tennessee,
was thrown into great excitement, on the
10th, by the accidental shooting and
killing of Mrs. R. H. Bibb, by her cou?
sin, Thomas Hoekersmith, a lad of about
fourteen. The boy is now a raving ma?
niac. He ran up the ?treet from tho
spot, screaming and tearing his clothes
from his person.
The Texas Legislature, on tue 15th,
adopted tho fifteenth amendment. The
fourteenth amendment passed the House.
The President of tho Senate was de?
clared ineligible by Reynolds, and un?
seated. Pelato and Elatn, conserval ives,
of tho Third and Thirty-sixth Districts,
were unseated and radicals seated.

in New York, ou Monday. Bishop James,
Mr. Tyng, Jr., and others delivered ad?
dresses. Burns still runs a liquor store
next door, through which the ministers
were obliged to pass to reach the mis?

New York papers say that Mr. A. T.
Stewart has added, by purohase, 1,0U0
acres to his Dem pst ead tract, and is now
having it laid out in lots, with broad
streets and avenues. It is Mr. Stownrt's j
intention to build a village
