The wind was high, and I moved off rapidly, in a North-east? erly direction. I knew by the shouts of the peopls, which were given with a will, that my balloon ascension thns far had proved satisfactory, and I began to look T around on the grand scene presented to thy view. The atmosphere was very - olear, giving me a prospect bouuded only by the horizon, which was sharply defined, and which presented a lino un? broken by any mountainous projections around ita entire circumference. The wh?l? face of the country appeared ex? ceedingly level, though occasionally I saw some billa, but the general appear? ance .was that of a vast plain, 1 I bad a fine view, of the city jost at the start, bat in consequence of moving away so fast, I could but notice its-general appear once of regularity and neatness. They tried hard, na I have since learned, to keep up with me, bat, in. vain. I orossed the road diagonally, and left them away behind. At half-past 4,1 hud reached the beigh! ? of ono 'mile, and feeling a little chilly, pat on my over-coat. To the loft of my coarse, I saw three villages-they were Graniteville, Aiken and Blackville. Occasionally I carno low enougt to; hear voices of persona below, bu though I tried repeatedly to get somt information of my whereabouts, I failec to elicit aay response to my questions As I passed over one house, I felt quit? ?ure that tue dwellers therein bad re ceived a terrible score, for the womei were soreaming in a terrible manner aided by a single male voice. The win< bore me rapidly by the place, and I hat my quiet laugh at their expense, when '. saw a flash near the door of tho house followed by the report of a gun. I hav no doubt the shot was intended for th balloon, bat I was out of the reach of an; ordinary gun, and so had another langi to myself. As a sail on the water is good appetizer, so is a voyage in the ail and this was no exception. Being wei provisioned, I partook of a hearty sap per, stopping occasionally to observe th movements of the balloon, and to put ou a little.sand occasionally, for the sun wo getting lower, and the gas that had bee warmed by its rays cooling and condon: iug, thus gradually losing a portion < its buoyancy. Night was approaching and, though I felt sure that it should L moon-light, I looked in vain for the si very orb. D?ring the day-light, I hod m ticed smoke curling up from the wooi in mony places, but now all over tl country near and far the fires could 1 seen, fairly sprinkling the earth wit lights; in some places they were so n morons and near together, that they ga' in the distance the exact appearance a large city, with its thousands of gs lights. I thought at tbs time, howevc that no metter how fine to look upo they would be dangerous places to coe in contact with when lauding. I look? at my compass' occasionally, and som times found myself going North of Es and sometimes South-east, the upp current carrying me in the latter dirt tion. T did not know my exact whoi abouts, but hoped I was nearing Charit ton, and this caused mo to continue t voyage longer than I otherwise shoe have done. The moon did me good si vice in the reflections given as I pass along, showing the exact nature of t ground, whether swamps or dry lac It was past 7 o'clock, when suddenly left behind me all signs of cultivate and started into what seemed to me be tho beginning of a district bearing diameter entirely different from ai thing that had come under my obser tion Def ore. I knew I must be opproot iug the Atlantic, and thought I coi moke it ont ia the distance, and it n struck me that possibly I might bi nothing better before me than that wb was now under me. I had struck i swamps in the vioinity of the Son River, and being overflowed by tbe riv they presented for miles the most un vitihg prospect for o landing I over held, and my relief can bo i magi i wben I passed again to dry land. X now allowed the balloon to se gradually, with th? view of landing soon a? an opportunity offered. I flo? along for some time, ho wo ver, before a clearing came in my way ; when thia came at laat in the shape ot a field walled around by a thick wood. The rate pf speed at which t was traveling and tho uncertainty with which height ia mea? sured by tue eye in tho absence of day- - light, showed me the difficulty of land? ing nuder Buch circumstances. Tho attempt was made, however, but Without. snooess, jost touching the tree-tops on tho opposite side of tho lot. I had one bag ot ballast left. It was immediately thrown over and kept tho balloon out of the trees for a wbilo, but it soon settled again and brushed the tops of five or six pines, causing it to rebound from fifty to an hundred feet. This brought to view another field just ahead, on whioh were a number of naked dead pines. To bay? the balloon impaled on one of these, is probably the most dangerous position in whioh the uerouaut could be placed, and I would much rather have taken the chances among the green pines, but my ballast was gone. I quickly let go my drag rope, hoping to olear them by let? ting the rope drag, instead of carrying its dead weight in tho basket, but it was not enough, and in another moment, tho "Hyperion" dashed broadside against one of the tallest of these fiendish-look? ing skeletons and wns fastened in its arms; the sudden escape of all the gas must, of course, follow, aud what then? I jumped on to the odge of tho basket, seized the drag rope with my hands, took a turn around one leg, and the next moment would huvo beeu safo upon the grouud; but tho gas had escaped in less time than it took mo to make my prepa? rations, and with n crash, tho rotten limbs gave way, and tho wholo mass fell together. The distance from the ground must have boen from fifty to sixty feet, and how I escaped with whole bones, seems to me, at this moment, a miracle. The shock was terrible. I arose imme? diately to my feet, staggering about liko a drunken man, and yet astonished that I was able to do so much. I soon regain? ed st re ti y th, however, sufficient to enable mo to reach a house near by, where I found some very intelligent colored peo? ple, who did all that lay in their power to render me tho assistance I needed. I suffered much puiu during the night, and did not preteud to sleep; but by Thursday afternoon, I bad so far recover? ed as to be ablo to eeo to the packing of the wreck of the balloon, and at 7 o'clock that evening, I started in a wagon for Gourdin Station, on tho North-eastern Railroad, 50 miles from Charleston and 18 miles from where I landed. The place of my descent was in the extreme South? eastern portion of Clarendon County, S. C., on the plantation of Mrs. Qeorge H. Golby. On Friday morning, I took the oars for Charleston, and left for Augusta tho same eveuing.
