"-The New York Herald, in an article upon the wonderful inarch of events in the nine? teenth century, says: "In all directions, science is giving man the mastery of nature. The crooked places are being made straight, the rough Slaces plain. We know no barrier. Wo read no difficulty. The elements have become our obedient servants. What greater power is yet to be given us? To what unknown future are we tending? We have caught the winds and made them the oarriers of the globe. We have tamed the mighty ocean nnd made it the path-way of commerce. We have seized the fierce lightning and made it the swift messenger of thought. What gives additional value to these triumphs is that they have boen won by and in the interest of the people. Wo build no more pyramids, because we know no slavery. One hundred years hence, what other changes will have taken place? That tho world will be grander, and men nobler, happier and moro united, we cannot allow ourselves to donbt. Wo can see thrones crumbling to pieces and national barriers every? where disappearing. 'We can seo,' to qnote the words of the eloquent and philosophic DeMaistre, 'the human family rushing together towards some immense unity-but of tho name and nature ot that unity it is not \ et safe to speak with authority.'" PROTECTION AGAINST DESIGNING YOUNG WOMEN.-According to tho Albany cor pondent of the Buffalo Express, thc fol? lowing bill is to bo offered in the New York L?gislature: "SECTION 1. Any female of chaste cha? racter, under the age of seventeen years, who shall, with evil intent, winningly, winsomely and wilfully decoy and se? duce from his domestic duties a married man, (he being the father of a family and having children over ten years of age,) and by artful wiles draw him away from his family, shall, on conviction, be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall bc imprisoned in a bouse of refuge for not lesa than two days. If, on the trial of such young and artful female, it shall be shown that the married mau so seduced and enticed away is a minister of the gospel, in good standing, the offender shall in like manner be sentenced to not less than one hour, nor moro than two hours in the County jail." The latest-and we hope the last-de velopments in the Stowe-Byron scandal, appears in thc London Quarterly Review. It consists of a number of letters from Lord and Lady Byron and from Lady Augusta Leigh, which nre ably, and so far as the case permitted, modestly edit? ed with annotations and comments. It kills the whole story, including Charles Mackey's smut about the smutty Medora Leigh, while the latter is now shown to be a bad character, picked up by Lady Byron to assail-after many years of sisterly intercourse-the name and fame | of Byron's sister Augusta, by a most j infamous charge against her owu mother. We have done with the bad job. STARTLING STATISTICS.-Senator Pat? terson, of New Hampshire, in his speech before the Congressional Temperance So oiety, Sunday afternoon, said if all thc money expended in the distillation of whiskey, was placed every year in the National Treasury, it would liquidate the pnblio debt in less than a decade of years. It is proved that America has 500,000 inebriate citizens, 25,000 of whom nre sacrificed yearly at tbe altar of intem? perance. The vice of intemperance re? cruited from the ranks of the fuirent and most promising, the strongest and the best, dragging them down gradually. Some idea of what the liquor trade of the United States amounts to may be fained from the fact that on the 1st of december last there wero in bond throughout the country 13,402,545 gal? lons-enough to make a good sized hike.
