CHAPTER I-ORKNEY. Orkney was not the same place as when Juliet left home. She had last Been it in mid-winter, when the hills were bleak and the valleys bare; bat she greeted the placo again in the heart of summer, when there waa the sound of music among the trees and a glory over the landscape. There were many things to divert the yoong girl's attention and pre? vent her mind from dwelling continually on thoughts of her absent lover. So many balls at the hotel, so many beaux, so many rides and walks, and so many mer? ry-makings of every description. Bat sho was never for a moment untrue to the absent-her heart faltered not in its allegiance. She enjoyed these gay doings, for they were natural to her age and her sonny disposition, but one en? dearing word from Karl were worth them all. Not even Harry Babbitt eould make her false to his memory, though she could be kind and easy with Harry now, without ibo fear of exoiting Karl's dis? pleasure. Poor Harry came to Orkney during tho summer, but returned a sadder and a wiser man. Mr. Clayburn was immense? ly relieved when his rejection transpired. "I like Harry," he said to his daugh? ter. "He's a young man of kind heart and gentlemanly deportment, and no doubt would make you an excellent hus? band. If I had another daughter, for his own worth, and his father's sake, she should marry him; but for you, my child, I have other views. " Other views? What views? Juliet dared not ask. Her father resumed: "Enjoy for a season y oar youthful pursuits and the pleasures of society, but recollect, my daughter, there is a certain point to which yon can go, and no farther. If I have never told you before, I give you warning now, that you aro already a promised wife. Bear this in mind, and keep your heart intact, or send it only where you know your hand is bestowed. Frank will come to claim yon for his wife when I Bee flt that he should do so." Juliet's tongue was paralyzed-she ut? tered not a word. She know she ought to speak-ought to tell her father his warning came too late, for she was already the betrothed of another, and her heart in his keeping. But the opportune moment passed and Juliet had not the courage to broach the subject afterward of her own accord. She hoped and prayed her father might mention the matter again, but he did not. Mr. Clayburn's mind was perfectly at rest-be considered his daughter's silence as merely indicative of that maidenly re servo which distinguished her, and never doubted, for an instant, that she acqui? esced folly in his wishes and plans for her future. This doublo deception which she was practicing upon her father, gnawed at Juliet's heart with a greedy pain more sharp and poignant in its bit? ter sensations than anything sho had ever experienced. Juliet began to hate her? self. She felt unworthy of tho tender love, the caresses, the devotion lavished upon her by those idolizing parents, whom she was BO cruelly deceiving. They thought only of her-lived only for her -and were never happy save when strewing her pathway with bright flowers. The flowers pricked Juliet ns if they were all thorns and she wore walking over them in her bare-feet, tho blood, oozing from a hundred wounds and changing the beautiful flowers into a mass of clot? ted ugliness. How would these fond parents feel toward her when they be? came cognizant of her wicked deceit? Her father especially, who was so rigid and stern in his notions of honor? Would he not spurn ker from him, when he knew her life was a daily lie? When ho knew she lived under his roof, ate his bread, squandered his money, received his affection, professed by her silence and her conduct that she acknowledged and was governed by his authority, and all the time was bound by a secret pro? mise to the man whom her father knew not-to desert him when he bade her do so? She realized now, what sho had never truly done before, the unparalleled sacrifices, the frightful consequences which might be involved in the per? formance of that sacred promise she had made to Karl. Could she desert her aged father? her feeble, loving mother? Her heart turned siok at the thought. Besides this, she was tortured for many weeks with fears uud sickening apprehensions about Karl himself. Was he well? and had the voyage been pros? perous? She could not hear. Her heart deprived of healthy natural food, Juliet plunged into gay lifo and reckless ex? penditures, striving in that way to numb the miserable sensations nt its coro. She frequented the entertainments at tho hotel, whioh was now, as usual in the summer months, crowded with health and pleasure-seekers. She lost tho calm, gentle cheerfulness which belonged to her character, and, in its stead, was that unmistakable dash of reckless gaiety, which always betokens to the acute ob? server an nneasy heart. "You play the gamo with a high hand," said her father, laughingly, to her one day, as he glanced over one of her enormous bills, just arrived by post from Charleston.
