Roohefort waa not arrested before he
started for the political meetiug, where
5,000 persons were assembled. It was
net necessary that this meeting should
be thus disturbed, and the people who
wero participating in it aroused to vio?
lence. The sot of the Government was
the provocation to the disturbances
which took place.
A member of the ministry explained
that the authorities had refrained from
arresting Roohefort at the Chambers to
avoid the scandal to which his arrest
would have given riso. He asserted that
the friends of Rochefort wero prepared
to make the demonstration which they
had made, and upon this fact the minis?
try would rest the responsibility of what
had taken place, and the country would
judge between the ministry and tho
rioters. He said thero need be no unea?
siness for the people. The Government
was animated by the best sentiments to?
wards them. The Minister of the Inte?
rior followed with the assertion that thc
friends of Roohefort had determined on

Dr. Charles R. Bricken, the well-kuowr
physician and theatrical lessee, and >
dramatic author of some note, wau killer
to-day by the discharge of a pistol in hi:
hands. He was tho author of the Cahir
and Parlor, a play for a long timo per
formed in the Southern theatres as ar
offset to Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Alexander Gardener, colored, ager!
thirty-fivo, was liuug at New Kent Cou ri
House, this morning, for the rape am
murder of Mrs. Stewart, and the murdei
of John Baker, her colored farm manu
ger. The prisoner, on tho night befon
his execution, confessed that with Jobi
Kennedy, who afterwards made his es
cape, he agreed to murder Baker. The;
found Baker in the field, and Kennedy
shot him. Kennedy then went to Mrs
Stewart's house, and Gardener hean
her crying, and a few moments afte
Kennedy came out, saying ho had ra
vished and murdered her. They firei
the house and burnt ber body, an<
threw Baker's body in tho river. Ol
the scaffold, this morning, Gardene
only said: "I am not guilty. I don'
know whether I am going to Heaven o
hell." A crowd of colored women, a
the gallows, assailed him with cries of
"You are going to hell, that's where yoi
are going!" The drop foll, and Garde
ner died instantly.

Now know vo, that I, ROBERT K. SCOTT,
Governor of the Stato of South Carolina, in
order that thc ends of Justice may be sub?
served, and tho majesty of the law vindicated,
do hereby offer a reward ot FIVE HUNDRED
DOLLARS for tho apprehension and delivery,
in any jail in this State, of the murdorer of
tho said Richard Haverner, with proof to con?
vict: and a proportionate reward will be paid
for any information that may lead to bia ap?
prehension and conviction.
Said Graham is a colored man, about twen?
ty-one years of age; of dark complexion; about
five foot six or seven inches high; and baa a
wen back of one of his cars.

panied him in his flight.

Court of Common Pleas for Laureas County,

bidder, at public auction, tho property of the
said Laurens Railroad Company, described as
follows: Tho Railroad of tho said Company,
running from Newberry village to Laurens -
ville, including the road-bed, right of way ami
lauds occupied by or belonging to tho said
Company, togothor with the several super?
structures and tracks thereon, and all raila
and othor materials used on the same, and
