The Ku-Klax-the sanguinary- mon?
sters in masks, once the especial terror
of the loyal North-have again made
their appearance in the South. This
time, they break out, not in Tennessee,
but in Alabama. They w ould seem, too,
to have changed their politics, as well os
their field of operations, since they were
last heard from. This time, there was
nothing "loyal" about their victims.
They were the nephews of General
Gideon J. Pillow, and one of them
served through tho late war as a Confe?
derate soldier. They could not, there?
fore, have fallen victims to "rebel hate,"
as thousands of "loyal citizens" have
done, through the columns of tho radical
press. These unfortunate young men,
who were very peaceablo in disposition,
and were not known to have an enemy
in the world, were born and reared in
Maury County, Tennessee, but were
living, at.the'timc of their death, near
Leighton, a small town, some twelve or
fifteen miles East of Tuscumbia, in
North Alabama, whero tho older of tho
two had married since the war. The
Knoxville Press mid Herald learns, from
the brother-in-law of the murdered men,
who is a resident of Knoxville, that
"Grunville Pillow, the elder brother,
was seated, with his family, after supper, |
around tho hearth, when semo oue j
knocked at tho door. Granville went to '
tho door, and oponed it. No sooner !
.was the door opened, thau he was shot iu ?
tho face by some ono. His wound
proved mortal, and he died within a few
minut?s after receiving it. Tho assassins I
then entered the house, and proceeded |
to the room of "William Pillow, the j
younger brother, who had retired to bed. |
They compelled him to get up and leave j
the house with them. Next morning, j
the body of William was found, in n
sink-hole, a short distance from thc j
house. No clue had bceu obtained to
the assassins, or of the motive which led
to the murders."
Another account says that the mur?
ders were committed by two men in
masks. They belong, no doubt, to that
class of mid-night murderers and plun?
derers who committed so many villainies
a abort time ago-villainies for which the
Southern people were held responsible,
and for which they paid so dearly. But
as in this instance neither of the men
killed was a "loyal white" or a "colored
citizen who bad always boen true to the 1
old flag," we do not think that tho peo- >
pie of Alabama need apprehend that
Congress will make their murders the
pretext for remanding the State back to
a territorial condition, and establishing
over it a military government. Precious
in the sight of Congress is the death of a
negro, a carpet-bagger, or a scalawag,
especially when that negro, carpet-bag?
ger, or scnlawag meets his death while in
the oct of plundering a "rebel" hen?
roost; but the murder of such "traitors"
as the Messrs. Pillow is the best thing
that could happen to thom; and so long
as these fresh-sprung Ku Klux contine;'
their slaughter to "rebels," it is perhaps j
not to be feared that their bloody opera- i '
tions will result in a "Georgia biil" for '
the benefit of Alabama.
When the Virginia bill was nuder dis- 1 :
cussion in the House last week, its enc- 1
mies opposed its passage upon the ?
ground that "Virginia is to-day as thor- j 1
oughly rebel nud as completely unrecon- j
structed as at any former period," and
that "her loyalty is a sham, and her ac- j
ceptance of the situation a pretense." !
Somehow or other, they forgot to repeat ?
the old story that the ''rebels'" were mur- !,
dering the "loyal people*' by the dozen 1
in every county in the State, and that for
a "colored citizen" or "Union man" to j
avow his political sentiments was death, j
In short, they forgot to tell again that ,
Btory of a "perfect reign of terror among
the loy ali8ts," which has beeu told with
euch splendid effect in all their past
schemes for the ruin and humiliation of
the South. The result was, the bill was j
passed by the House, and there is a
probability that it will pass the Senate.
The most skillfully devised falsehoods of ?
this sort must wear out after a while, :
however, and the euemies of the bill !
may have thought thnt they had told the I
story of the bloody rebels about as often j
as it would bear telling-that too much ;
use bud robbed it of its virtue.

The Chinese quarter in the town ot
Sanjose, Cal., was burned Wednesday,
and about 1,000 Chinese were rendered 1
homeless.
