VISIT TO TUB NEW IKON STEAM LEVIA?
THAN.-Speaking of tho new lino of
steamers, between Charleston and Now
York, tho Courier says:
The most vemarknblo chango in the
way of city improvements, is in the two
tine piers before us, which, three years
ago, wero iu a very dilapidated condi?
tion, and apparently nbaudoned, now re?
built, and crowded with shipping- the
Baltimore steamers using Pier No. 1,
and the New York Steutn Line Tier No.
2. The great advantages of these piers, is
the large area availablo in rear of them,
affording facilities for storing 15,000
balee of cotton, between tho cotton press
and the piers.
The steamship South Carolina, the
pioneer vessel of the new linc, presenta
a very imposing and attractive appear?
ance, and bas tho following dimensions:
Length 262 feet; beam, 35 feet; depth of
hold, 20 feet. As we had some doubts
about her estimated capacity, wo walked
straight by tho gangway plunk into the
between-decks. We found no difficulty
iu effecting an entrance, and it may be
?us well to mention that these freight
doors opou seven foot wide and six feet
high, and are arranged so that, if the
stovedoro should bo iu a hurry, ho cnn
drive tho drays right aboard, and unload
between decks, "for short."
The space between, decks for cargo
certainly exceeded all our expectations,
running fore mid aft tho ship 2G2 by
35, and 8 foot high. Allowing for usual
lost space in her shape, there would be
nearly GO,OOO cubic foot of room for car?
go-equal to 1,500 bulos of cotton; while
the nrraugemuuts for ventilation ure so
perfect that, tho potato and vegetable
crops now growing will laugh for joy
when tliey get on tho pier, and probably
get off the carts by themselves iu their
hurry to secure such nice, comfortable
quarters on their way to tho fashionable
points North. As we have indicated, tho
loading and unloading is done through
the four side ports, fore and aft tho ves?
sel. Abreast of ouch port is a hatchway,
for bundling the lower-hold cargo, over
oaoh of which aro blocks and tackle, con?
necting with steam winches, for hoisting,
icc, into tho lower hold. \Vo were ?Inly
lowered, determined to see everything
for ourselves, nod take nothing from
hearsay. Down there wo found consider- !
able of a cavern, iuto which 700 or 800
bales of cotton could readily enough be
put. There is also a corresponding ca?
pacity iu the forward hold, affording
storage altogether, we should say, for
fully 3,000 bales.
We were struck with tho grout strengt h
of the ship. Heavy ungle iron frames,
eighteen inches apart, tho requirement
of tho English Lloyds, being twenty-1
four inches apart, three-fourth inch plat-1
ing double riveted usually oue-half inch,
aud single riveted. For safety, there aro
four iron water-tight compartments, and
tho eugine-room is cased with iron, and
thoroughly protected from chance of
fire. The engines have sixty-inch cylin?
ders, aud n surface condenser, of largo
site, supplies fresh water to the. boilers,
and furnishes more steam than can be
used ona consumption of twenty tons of
coal per day.
The South Carolina is brig rigged,
with wire rigging of the most modern
style, and has a vory elegant ?saloon, with
state-room berths for 100 passengers.
These state-rooms aro all of extra size,
and many aro commodious enough for
an entire family. As yet there is no fur?
niture aboard, but visitors can form an
idea of the comfort in storo for passen?
gers from the sizo of tho rooms, height
of ceiling and line ventilation.
Below deck for cargo, on deck for pas?
sengers, is a wonderful improvement on
the old fashioned plan of going down
bolow into a sultry and narrow apart?
ment for sleep or rest, in tho hot months
of July or August. The hurricane deck
extends foro and aft tho entire length of
the ship, aud givos a promenade of 2G2
feet entirely unobstructed.
Take tho South Carolina all in all, she
is an Al ship, aud must, with her con?
sort, tho Tennessee, contribute largely to
tho accommodation of our business com?
munity, and afford such facilities as will
help to build up trade in Charleston.
Wo found Captain Adkins ns serene us
lie was happy, and he mentioned to us
thut although not exactly fixed for enter?
taining couipauy, bc would ho plcuscd
to see his friends und the public general?
ly come down and sec the steamer say
between the hours of ld und o'clock to
duy.

PAIN KIIJ.KU-A (THE KOK OIPII
TIIKKIA.- All interested, please read tho
following extract from a letter from Mrs. Ellen
D. Mason, wife of Rev. Francis Mason,
Tounghoo, Birmali:
* * * My son was taken violently Bick
with diphtheria, cold chills, burning fever and
sore throat. I counted ono morning ton little
vesicles in his throat, very white, and his
tongue, towards tho root, just liko a wator
I melon, full of seeds; tho remainder coated as
thick as a knife-blade. Ko many children
have died around here, 1 was afraid to call a
physician, ami I thought 1 would try your
Pain Killer for a gargle, with small doses in?
wardly. I dill so, and found tho garglo inva?
riably cut off the vosiclee, and he raised them
up, oft on covered with blood. Ho was taken
ou Sunday; on Wednesday, his throat was
clear, and his tongue rapidly clearing off. I
alan used it as a liniment, with castor oil and
hartshorn, for his neck. It seemed to me a
wonderful cure, and I can but wish it could be
known to tho many puor muthern in our land
j who are losing HO many children by this
I dreadful disease.
I have found your Pain Killer ono of the
[ most valuable medicines ever used in
j ilirmah. Once I was stung by a very largo
I black scorpion; the pain was indescriba?
ble. I immediately applied the Pain Killer, (for
! I never travel without it,) again and again,
; and in half an hour my foot was well.
Dr. Walton writes from Coschoefon: "Your
Pain Killer cures this new disease - Diphtheria,
or .Sore Throat-that is so alarmingly preva?
lent here; and it has not been known to fail in
any instance when used in limo. This fact you
should make kuown to thc world." (It is used
I in this disease as a gargle and lotion, as woll
I HS a tonic and stimulant.)
I In Halifax, where this disuse prevailed for
many mouths in its most malignant form, the
use of PKHIIY DAVIS' "PAIN KII.I.KU" was inva?
riably attended with the most favorable re
! suits, when it waa used ere the disease had made
too inuch progress to preclude Ibo uso of so
powerful a stimulant. Jan 1 IjlmojH
