OE GLYCERINE.-This sub- ; stance, discovered by Seb?elo in 1780, is . ono which has conni into uso for a great many applications during the past few years, in consequence ol' sonic peculiar properties which it has been found to possess. Tho modo of preparation need not be indicated herc, as it. is familiar to * most of our readers. It is a colorless syrup of sweet taste, attracts water from the air and other bodies, is soluble in alcohol and ether, aud may ho ignited, barning with a blue flame. lt does not dry away, and has a sweet , taste, without hoing sticky, like syrup. It passes with difficulty into n condition of fermentation, aud consequently docs not readily spoil. It is used for tho preparation of moist colors for tho painter and of embossing clay, the pre? paration of animal bladders and of weavers' starch, now known by tho name of glycerocole. Mixed with un equal weight of glue it forms a material for printers' rollers, and this is also used as a toilet article to prevent tho chapping of tho hands and faco, and likewise for ; a soap, serviceable with very hard water, j It is used also in putting np fruit, for filling gas meters to prevent freezing, I and for tho extraetiou of dolicato per fumes; and in dyeing, to prevent the deposition of metallic oxides by alkalies. : Fluster models, washed first with a solu? tion of soap, and then coated with gly? cerine, allow tho cast tobe removed with? out any difficulty. Animal glue, mixed with one-fourth its weight of glycerine, ' loses its brittleness after dring, and re? mains flexible. Tho list of applications of glycerine might bo greatly extended, : as iu the preparation of nitro-glycerine and dynamite, in rendering petroleum casks impervious to that liquid by coat iug them internally with a mixturo of glycerine and glue, .fcc, many of which wo have previously adverted to; while for its many uses in medicino aud stir- , gery, it is only necessary to reler io the textbook and journals of tue day. Jeremy Taylor says: "If you aro for pleasure, marry; if you prize health, marry. A good wife is heaven's last, best gift to man; his angel of mercy; minister of graces innumerable; his gem of many virtues; his casket of jewels; her voico his sweetest music; her smile ? his brightest day; her kiss his guardian ; of innocence; her arms tho palo of his safety, the balm of his health, the bnl- | sam of his life; her industry his surest, wenlth; her economy his safest steward; her lips his faithful counselors; her ' bosom tho softest pillow of his cares; and her prayers tho ablest advocates of heaven's blessings on his head." DON'T WHIP A FRIGHTENED HORSE. Never whip your horse for becoming frightened at any object by tho road? side; for if he soes a stump, a log, or t heap of tan-bark in tho road, and, while he is carefully eyeing it, and about to pass it, you strike him with the whip, it is the log, or the stump, or the tan-bark ^at ia hiirtjpr^him. in hie way of reason " j0tj?t9^&&ttm%'i t?nre, Vof wili net. moro frightened. Give him time to examine and smell of all these objects, and use the war bridle to ns-.ist yon iu bringing him carefully to these objects of fear. Bring all objects, if possible, to his nose, and let him smell of them, and then you can corumenco to gent?o him with them. DEMORALIZED NEGROES.-Tho Mariana (I'la.) Courier says: "There, aro not less than 300 negroes in this county who have moved on public lands and ceased to la? bor on the plantations, except wheu the pinch of hunger compels them. A ma? jority of them aro without a visible means of support, and havo, it is thought, lived to a great exteut on tho live stock, which has been on tho do creaso for the last three years. This class furnishes moat of the criminals for the peuiteutiary, and ia a great drawback to the moro thrifty and industrious of their color. Arrangements for the consol'(intion of the ocean, cables between Amerioa and Ku ropo have been concluded in London, and only require the sanction of the directors. The <i0rnpanics will east all receipts into a combon purso and then share proportionately-, aoa should the j land line oonneoting wUh one cable be down, the despatches will ba Rcnt by the other, without regard to tho company which may have recoived them. APPALLING-Two SONS OP GEN. Gm. PILLOW MURDERED.-Tho Huntsville In? dependent, of the 12tb, says: "We learn from Conductor Stephenson, of tho Memphis and Charleston Railroad, that on Sunday night last, two sons of Gen. Gid. Pillow, who had been living on tho plantation near Lagrungo, Alabama, were shot and killed by n party of disguised men. Tho Vicksburg Times suggests that os an act of justico to the 6G.U00 negroes who voted for Alcorn, ono negro Senator should bo sent to Cougrcss, instead of picking both from tho 10.000 scalawags ?ind carpet-baggers who voted on the samo side. Priuco Bonaparte will be tried publicly in Paris, before Mio High Court of Jus? tice, in tho Hall of Justice at Versailles. No nppeul is allowed from its decision.
