ALASKA.-Sitka is the largest town in
Alaska, a town of aboat sixty houses and
800 inhabitants, chiefly Russians, of tbe
lower claus; but divided from it only by
a stockade is an Indian village of 900
souls more. Tbe prodnots of the re?
gions round about are limited to fish,
furs and timber. Potatoes, turnips,
radishes, and onions can be raised, but
they are small. They have there over
thirty varieties of indigenous grasses;
but hay cannot bo cured-not sun
enough. Goal is found within thirty
miles of Sitka, but it is so bituminous
that it has burned out the smoke-stacks
of steamers nsing it. Gold is found in
several localities, but not in paying
quantities. The mountain tops behind
Sitka are whito all Bummer; but along
the coast there, near the sea level, it
seldom snows, even in winter, and the
thermometer hardly ever falls below the
freezing point. About tho 23d of De?
cember at Sitka the night takes np the
whole twenty-four hours, and about the
'?3d of June tho evening daylight blends
into that of the morning.

TEMP?RANCE.-The New York Journal j
of Commerce dwells on the importance of i
temperance, and appeals to moderate ?
drinkers to abstain from "tippling" be
tween business hours. The editor says:
"Wo believe the habitual use of fiery
liquids in any considerable quantity to
be injurious to tho physical system; but
whether this is so or not, the person who
cannot pursue his ordinary avocation
without pausing eyer and anon for a
glass of grog is a sieve of appetite, and
liable to become u drunkard." This is a
wiso and wholesome hint to many, given
in good spirit, by our contemporary.

Railroad Company having been formed
by the consolidation of the Charlotte and
.South Carolina and thu Columbia aud
Augusta Railroad, and having executed j
u first, and only mortgage on its entire
property of 195 miles, including equip?
ment, is now redeeming all the bonds
formerly issued by said two companies :
by an exchango of its first mortgage '.
-bonds. These bonds bear seven per <
cent, interest, payable in January and i
July, and are amply secured by a mort
gage on property which cost per mile
more than three times the amount of
bunds so issued.
The present price of the stock and the |
business of the road give ample guaran- !
tee of toe security of the obligations for j
a permanent investment. Indeed the I
opinion is raely expressed, that there is
no safer bo\ls issued by any party or f
