THE UPAS TRUE-A CURIOUS FACT IN
THE HISTORY OP DELUSIONS.-It is ono of
the curious facts in the history of delu?
sions that even scientific men once had
au unquestioning faith in the deadly in?
fluence of the upas tree on all living
thiugs within its range. Dr. F:ersch. an
eminent surgeon in the service of the
East India Compauy, first described the "
tree and its destructive power in "Pen
nook's Outlines of the Globe," published
at the closo of the lust century.?< As ho '
gave tho account from his own observa- j
tion, it seemed entitled to greater weight.
He HU id: "I saw it myself, the sole indi- \
vidual of its species, standing alone in a j
scene of solitary horror, in the middle of j
a naked, blasted plain, surrounded by a i
circle of mountains, tho whole area of
which is covered with skeletons of birds,
beasts and men. Not a vestige of vege?

taminated atmosphere, and evcu the
fishes die in the water."
Mr. Darwin, the distinguished botan?
ist, accepted the theory ns a scientific
fact, and in his "Botanic Garden," exer?
cised n little poetic license, making the
miasma penetrate over ten leagues square,
and destroy alike the eagle in the air or
tho lion ou tho plain.
A more careful investigation has found
tho tree to bo perfectly harmless, and
Unit the destructive power is due alono
to fumes of sulphate and carbonic acid
and gas coming from volcanic openings
in the region. There is a famous "Val?
ley of Poison" at the foot of the voloano
Papandaging, in Java, where scientific
travelers have found a great number of
dead animals of various kinds, as dogs,
sots, tigers, rhinoceroses, squirrels,
birds and snakes. Tho soft parts of the
mimais, as the skin and the muscles, and
bair and feathers, aro preserved, while
the bodies crumble and disappear. No
living thing is found in tho vicinity, save
the upas trees, aud it is not surprising
rhat superstitious notions of its mala?
rious power should have boen widespread.
But the true cause of death in this case
is very obvious, as there are many cre?
vices and openings in tho side of the
mountains, from which carbonic acid
gas nnd sui ph uro u H fumes are emitted in
great quantities. It was by these emis?
sions that the elder Pliny and his com-1
panions were suffocated at the time of !
the destruction of Herculaneum, though ]
they were miles away from Vesuvius. ,
A "Pennsylvania bachelor" thus got-I

Early last week a prominent Now York
gambler registered at ? botet; and daring
?he day "aocidentally" met with a "faro
ist," who does basin ess at No. -,
street.
The New Yorker observed to the Pitts
burger that he had taken a run over
here for the parp?se of plucking a
"Tessa drover}" who h?d "slathen of
money," and who would arrive in the
city in a day or two. The next day
another prominent New York profes?
sional, accompanied by the identical
"Texan drover," accidentally came in
contact with the Pittsburg Egyptian.
About an hour afterward, New Yorker
No. 1 called upon the Pittsbnrger aud ex?
plained the plan against the "drover."
Tho two New York professionals were
after the "drover." They had a "fold
np spread" whioh they carried with
them, bnt they were rather afraid that
the "drover" would feel suspicious about
it. Would Mr.-extend tho fraternal
courtesy to loan the New Yorkers the
"lay-out" of the firm, to be taken to
their room at the hotel, whore the
"Texan drover" was to be plucked at
leisure, and in the meantime use their
"spread" in the ordinary line of busi?
ness! Tho exchange was effected. Two i
days passed, and the New Yorkers wore
apparently dejected.
They had worked hard to beat Texas,
but had only succeeded in extracting
about $1,700 from that nonchalant indi?
vidual; therefore, they wonld return the
"lay-out." But after all, there was a
chance to beat the dealer in bovines.
They would "rope" him into No. -,
street, where something could be "put
up" on him. In doe time the "drover,"
innocent of the dark plot that was laid
against him, accompanied by his two
supposed friends, put iu ab appearance
in the placo already indicated.
To more deeply dissimulate, the two
.'ropera*' joined in the grand war against |
the tiger. The dealer felt good, and the j
drover muttered a fearful oath that bis
money could not be exhausted. His
friends were dejected, however. They
bought largely of twenty-five cents chips.
"Texas" scorned anything less than five
dollar "fish"-would sooner havo twenty
five dollar ones. Suddenly the Texas
Crcesus took a fanoy to the ace, king,
queen and jack, and staked his chips on
them. Thereafter he lost no more ?
money. With every turn up his checks j
were on the winning or safe enrd. His
betrayers (?) followed his bots, and i
whichever of the four charmed cards
that he would bet ou, they would heap up ?
their insignificant twenty-five cents upon j
and around, until it was hard to soe his
fifty-dollar bet, or tell just what card it I
was on. And thus the game proceeded.
Tho perfidious "ropers" wore losing
money as otteu os they won, but some?
how or other the bank could not get even
a "split" on tho man from Texas. Once
wheuhe staked forty dollars on tho king,
there was a "split," and tho dealer
reached over for thc twenty, when lo and
behold! tho checks r. ere on tho queon.
Shortly after, the drover staked on the
queen very largely, and the queen lost
and the jack won. The dealer triumph?
antly went for the pile, bat to his utter
amazement he saw that he was mistaken,
and that the stake was on the jack. The
dealer rubbed his eyes, so did the "look?
out ;" likewise did the stockholders in
the bank. Things were mystified, but
still the play went on, when suddenly ;
the dealer ordered a halt. Something '
strack him as strange. The king-upon '
which the "drover" had staked largely- !
lost, but just as that fact was developed
by the turn of the card, he saw the stake !
get up and walk over to the queen, and I
place itself under her protection.
It is needless to say that busiaess
ceased immediately, The Texan arose,
called languidly for a drink, in which he
was joined by the perfidious wretches
who were trying to pluck him, and then,
bidding the bankers good-night, do- i
parted, from whioh moment he has not
beon visible in the flesh-at least, to thoso 1
most intercstod in him. Also thus of his 1
perfidious friends.
Tho lights wero put out, and dealer, '
"lookout" and bankers retired, if not in i
terror, at least in amazement. But '
something dawned upon them in the I
darkness, metaphorically speaking. There
was some haman diviuity, and not tho '
genuine Plutonio article, at the bottom !
of this thing. Bright and early next I
morning each particular banker might
have been seen, armed with a screw?
driver, entering tho bank about five
minutes apart, frightening tho porter
with their extraordinary appearance. A
consultation was held. Something mnst '
be done. Attacking the "layout" with
the screw-drivers, they found the fol
lowing state of the case: The screws
fastening down the green cover of the
table had been removed by the party
who borrowed it, the oloth removed, a
series of grooves out in it, which were
filled with a series of springs, an attach?
ment similar to that used in tho latest
improved sewing machines, on an exact '
line with the ends of the oards opposite !
the dealer, and in the place of the screws i
was a very fine imitation, but whioh was
really a spring connecting with the other
arrangement. AU the "drover" had to
do was to watch the turn of the oards,
and if his stake was on a losing ono, he
pressed the proper spring with a pencil,
with whioh ne kept his game, and the
stake was transferred to another card,
the "drover's" friends distracting the
attention of the dealer at the critical
moment
The game was spoiled in the way de?
scribed. The "Texas drover" and his
friends have gone West to "put np"
another job. Ho ia the same gentleman
who figured in New York some two weeks
ago in a similar way, breaking one bank
andj running heavily on another. Bat
the New York tiger-keepers have not yet
found out the way the "drover" did the
thing. He is known in eil the principal
oities as a sharp gambler, and his name
is said td be J<*-r- M--.

A curious caso of "suspended anima?
tion" is reported in St. Louis. A man
was stricken down, with what was sup?
posed to bo paralysis, and apparently
died. A day was fixed for his funeral,
but symptoms of lifo appearing, the fu?
neral was stopped. He hos now been to
all appea :anoes dead, for five days, but
there is no sign of decomposition, and
the joints of his limbs are flexible.
The year just closed baa proved quite
disastrous to tho New England fishing
fleet. There have been sixteen vessels
sunk and twenty-three others have been
seriously injured. Sixty-seven persons
lost their lives by these mishaps. The
aggregate loss by disasters during the
past forty years, was $883,000; lives lost
during this period, 918.
Au important meeting was held in
Philadelphia last Wednesday, to concert
measures for building a new road, or
rather for consolidating several small
companies which have charters nov, and
opening a railway routo which will bring
New York within two hours1 dist-..-ce of
Philadelphia.
