as they are irreverently called, riding on

carriage, and asked a gentleman sitting

York lawyer, whose it was. "It belongs
to Colonel .Blank," replied tho lawyer.
"He canst be a rich man," observed the
old settler. "Yes," replied the lawyer;
"ho in a rich man, and a good, honest
man, too." "Ah?" queried his neighbor,
"what is his bu ?in eas?" "Ho is n banker
and broker." "A broker 1" said the old
man, with surprise; "a banker and bro?
ker, and sn honest man?" "Ob, yes,"
replied the lawyer; "there are honest
bankers and brokers." "Well," ?aid the
old man, in a doubting voice, "I dunno
'bout it; I class 'em all with lawyers."

This is tho way of tho world. Our for?
tunes and ourselves are so closely linked,
that we know not what is tho cause of
the love we Und. When these two part
company, it will soon be apparent to
whick affection will cling.

distract thought. They shake the nerves.

following extract from a letter from Mrs. Ellen
B. Mason, wife of Hov. Francis Mason,
Tounghoo, Birmah:
? * * My son was taken violently sick
with diphtheria, cold chills, burning fever and
sore throat. I counted one morning ten little
vesicles in his throat, very white, and hia
tongne, towards tho root, just like a water?
melon, rall of seeds; tho remainder coated aa
thick as a knife-blade. Ho many children
have died around here, I was afraid to call a
physician, and I thought I wonld try your
