near CainBville, Wilson County, Tenn.,
Sam. Har ri s waa shot and killed by a
man named Thomas Mount. The ball
took effect in the head, and the death of
the former was immediate. Mount, the
man who did the killing, was under, the
iofluenoe of liquor, and committed the
murder without the least provocation. :
He made his escape, and had not boen
captured at last accounts.

who bad a presentiment that his first rail?
road journey would cause his death, char?
tered a hack last week to take him, his
wife ?od obild to Syraouse, and during a
severe snow storm the vehicle was over?
turned while entering Auburn by contact
with the embankment of the Southern
Central Railroad, tumbling the passen?
gers into the snow, and apparently giv?
ing confirmation to his railroad theory.
At a recent horse-race, near Hinkle
villo, Ballard County, Ky., tho rider of
one of the horses and the horse both
were killed. Mr. Faulkner, the ridei,
attempted to avoid a mud hole in the
track, and, in making a circuit around it,
he ran his horse against a male hitched
near the track, throwing tho horse a
somersault, killing Mr. Faulkner and
breaking the horse's neck. The accident !
waa the result of careless riding.
There is something in tho wind at the
navy-yards. Private orders were sent i
from Washington on Wednesdry, to all j
the navy-yards, direoting that the work
of fitting out vessels of war for sea be !
vigorously prosecuted. The monitor
Miantonomah has been ordered to de- !
part at once, and her destination is ru?
mored to be Samana, our new Dominican
acquisition.
STRONG TESTIMONY.-As far back as
1859, Cornelias Wendell, who bribed
United States Senators enough to save
Andrew Johnson from impeachment, was i
a noted Congressional lobbyist. We |
know for certain that, in 1859, he sub- i
stantially declared as follows: "I can I
easily secure the votes of many Northern I
Congressmen, for money; bat I have
never yet been able to bay a Southern
man. "
