I think I am safe iii saying that Paul
Stanford hated me from the time we were
little boys at school together, np to the
period of which I am going to tell yon.
Unfortunately we had always been in
some sense rivals. We were nearly of
the B??io age--oar tastes wore .somewhat
similar-ear circumstances in life maoh
alike, and wo wt ro in the same classes
and studied tho same books. Probably
it waa mote because I applied myself
closer to my studies than he did that I
out-stripped Pani, and nnder all oircuin?
stances, where scholarship was concerned,
bore off the palm. Naturally, he was
quito ss clever as I was-a little more
brilliant Indeed-bot he lacked applica?
tion, and we all know that to become a
scholar requires time and patienoe and
hard study, even if one is A genia* in
the beginning. Paul had one decided
advantage over me. He was handsome
and graceful; all the girls in the vicinity
nade him aware of it. He was self-con
oeited naturally, and the adulation he
received made him vain. Nothing makes
a fool of a man any more speedily than
to have the women-folks make too muoh
of bim. Gav, and gallant, and courteous
ho was to all of them-but he coveted
the love of only. ono. Florence Wayne
was, a sweet little brunette of two or three
and twenty, and all the young men in
town were in love with her. She had
only lived iu Marley two years. Her na?
tive place was Philadelphia, but her
father's health requiring a change of air
they had come to Marley and established
themselves in a pretty cottage on the
Pownairoad. Florence was accomplished
in no ordinary degree, and she had tra?
veled a great deal, whioh is after all the
best way of educating oneself. In Phila?
delphia she had moved in the first so?
ciety, but she did not hold herself above
taking part in our rustie merry-makings,
and at the husking and apple bees, and
dances,.she was the life of the company.
To do Florence justice, she eu cou ruged
none of her suitors; was kind and cour?
teous-nothing more. As for me I had
been a beauty worshipper always, and
when I saw Florence Wayne I met for
the first time my ideal woman. 51 y heurt
i went from me and never came book. In
my wildest dreams I had never imagined
ever so faintly that such a glorious vision
would ever come upon me in dull, prosy
old Marley, where nothing ever did hap?
pen, year in and* year out. I had seen
very little of the world, and was shy and
awkward, and the passion I felt for the
beautiful Florence did not tend to make
me less embarrassed in her presence.
The fact of it was, the sight of her eon
fused me to such A degree that I was
always making myself ridiculous before
her, and if she had not been the kindest
hearted girl in existence, she would have
indulged in many a hearty laugh at my
expense. Once I summoned up courage
enough to invite her to ride with me. I
had as fine a horse as there was in the
country, and a good buggy, and might
have enjoyed myself if I had not been so
awkward. As it was, I trod on Florence's
dress, strack her bonnet with my elbow
in getting into the carriage, switched the
whip into her face, and did a score of
other things whioh I wonld havo died to
prevent. She made me so terribly con?
scious that I possessed hands and feet
that must be disposed of some way, and
how this disposition was to bo accom?
plished was the question.
Paul Stanford loved Florence, also,
but his love did not make a fool of him,
as mine did of me. He was always just
so polished and brilliant, and could say
his wittiest things with the dark eyes of
Florence fall apon him-just na well as
if she had been a thousand miles off.
Ob, how I envied him-his easy, quiet
nonchalance-and how chafed and irri?
tated I was by the patronizing air he
assumed towards me. Bat at last, fate
gave me a chance to do Floreaco a ser?
vice-to prove to her that I was not a
coward, though I might be an nwkwnrd

Marley was a sca-coust town, and it
was to avail himself of sea air and bath?
ing, that Mr. Wayne had removed thither.
Almost every floe day, he and Florence
were down on Point Pleasant beach
Mr. Wayne bathing, and Florence read?
ing and watching him.
The attachment between this father
and daughter was very strong-possibly
because Mr. Wayne had tried bard to be
both father and mother to his girl.
Sometimes, when I could get up suf?
ficient courage to do so, I wonld go down
to the Point and join them, but theso
occasions were rave, because I could not
make sure that Florence waoted me to
t'(starb them often. Trae, sho always
pilad, and mado room for mo on the
ck where she found a seat, but she did
/ uot smile much, and she had a way of
looking out to sea, whioh made me fancy
she was dreaming dreams in which I had
no part. Stanford was not so particular.
He was down at the Point almost every
day when the Waynes were there, and
the smell of his cigar and his light laugh
floated landward together on the sea?
breeze. It was in July, that the manu?
facturing company in which all my pro?
perty was invested, failed, and left me
very nearly penniless. It was plain that
I must go to work, and I was courageous
enough to be willing to take hold of any?
thing whioh offered. But the times were
dull, workmen plenty and work scarce,
and in spite of all my effort*, nothing
? presented itself for me to do. I Was

and apprehensive. In this mood, one
gray Septem ber day, I strolled down to

and I caught out in the surf the gleam
of Mr. Wayne's red bathing suit. Ev eu

and I saw with dismay that Mr. Wayne
had got beyond his depth, and not being
ablo io swim, the under-tide-which was
very strong st that time-was sucking
him nuder, in spite of his efforts to re?
sist it. In a moment, I was buffeting tho
waves, and though I am a strong man
and au extra good swimmer, I must con?
fess that more than once, I was on the
eve of giving over and letting fate dis

urden with which I was trying to reach
the shore. But the sight of Florenoe
standing on tho sands, her face white ns
death--nor arms extended towards us,
gave mo strength, and by and by, moro
dead than alive, I succeeded in laying the
old man at his daughter's feet. And I
would have risked my life over and over
again, for the sake of hearing her say, us
she said then
"William Morton, nany Heaven ever
bless you ! You have saved all I have to
love."
Paul Stanford was on tho spot almost
immediately-very much out of breath
and very profuse in his protestations of
sympathy. He had witnessed tho dan?
ger of Mr. Wayne from Colney's Hill, a
quarter of a mile away, and had como
with all haste, but too late to be of ma?
terial assistance. He hoped, however,
that Miss Wayne would not refuse him
the pleasure of supporting her father to
the cottage. And so by his superior tact
and address he managed to secure for
himself what I was dying to ask for, the
privilege of accompanying them to their
residence. But Mr. Wayne remembered
with gratitude the service I had done
him. Throe days afterwards I received
a letter from tho President of the Short
Lino and Point Pleasant Railroad, say?
ing that I could have the situation of
station agent and signal tender at Bach
ly's Bridge. The salary was a liberal
one, considering the duties to be per?
formed, and I was indebted for tho offer
of the situation to Mr. Wayne who was
; the personal friend of tho President. Of
course, I accepted the proposition. I
was in need of employment and this
placo would pay me a better salary than
I could hope to earn anywhere else by
manual labor alone. It was a trust of
responsibility, but I prided myself on no
fear in regard to being able to perform
my duty. The management of tho
switches came under my supervision, and
also the draw which had been fixed in
the bridge to allow vessels to pnss
through. By day wo used balls as sig?
nals-if tho draw was open, two groen
balls were hoisted from the standard a
few rods below the draw-if it waa closed
and all was right, two red bulls signified
that fact to the engineers. By night,
red and green lanterns were substituted
for the balls. So you will readily under?
stand that any failure on the part of thc
station-master to attend closely to his
duties might send soma passenger train
to destruction in the twinkle of an eye.
For two mouthe everything went like
clockwork. I had an efficient assistant
in John Stitson, a porter who had been
employed at the bridge for ton years,
and new all the ropes. I saw Florence
not unfrequently-she often went into
tho city-and always came to tho office
for her ticket. One day when thc car?
riage did not come for ncr from tho cot
tagp, I had the felicity of holding her
soft hand for a moment in minc as I
lifted her out.
From the time I took possession of the
railway station, Paul Stanford had begun
to manifest a sort of friendship for mo.
I had strong suspicions that it was as?
sumed, though it seemed real enough.
And indeed what particular object he
could have iu feigning a friendship for
mo he did not feel, I was at a loss to
imagine. I received his advances with u
coldness which would have repulsed most
men, but it seemed to have no effect ou
bim. He Bmoked his cigars in my little
private room, and read his papers there,
and talked to me in genial, off-hand
way-so thoroughly friendly that at
j times I was ashamed of myself and my
suspicions. Thinking it over now, I
know that "by hook or by crook" he
I managed to worm out of mo nil the se
' crcts of my business-if indeed they
j may be called secrets; but at that time I
: did not take notice of his inquiries, so
I gradually wero they put up. Meanwhile

I was trusted with large sums of money,
and was generally thought well of. Mr.
I Wayne invited me to dine at his house,
! and Florence sang and pluyed for me,
; and I would have beeu perfectly happy
I if Stanford had not made bis appearance
! and beguiled Florence away from my
side.
Uno dark, foggy night-1 remember it
, was Friday and it was in March-just ns
tho clock pointed to 10-tho hour when
tue Hallidou Express was due-I heard
tho whistle of a steamboat, three sharp
whistles and oue long one-a signal that
the draw must be opened. I seized thc
j green lantern and went out-Stitson was
already there, for ho had boen setting
the switches and banging up thc all-right
signal.
"Ease her down, Stitson !" said I-and
wo took the red lantern down aud hooked
on the green one in its place.
"It's cussed inconvenient having tb ic
steamer como just at this timo," growled
Stitson; "won't old Giles"-referring tc
tho driver of the Express-"won't ht
I swear at being stopped?"
BBHe opened the draw, and just as he
did so, I heard the whistle of the ap
proaohing train: Bnt there was no time

company'll send us after 'em to-morrow"
Like lightning shot through my brain
the thought of the switch! If I could
only reach it in time, I could send' tho
train ap . the steep grade of the wood
track, and before they reached the end
of it, the engineer would bo able to stop.
I flew over the rocgb ground, and laid
my hand on the iron rod of tho switch.
I had the key iu my pocket, I turned it
quickly and flung back tho lever! And
simultaneously a baud grasped my throat
and a voico I well knew hissed in my car:
"Yon mean to thwart me! but by
Heaven, I will kill yon first!"
I grappled with him, and we fell to the
ground together. And tho fierce thunder
of tho on-coming train drowned all sounds
and sense! A hot, sulphurous broath of
flame nod smoke swept over me. I felt
the gripe on my throat relaxing-then
there fell a ilbriod of comparative silent
COOIUCSK, and ever so dimly I realized
that tho train had run on to tho wood
traak and stopped. I put out my hand
to touch the head of Pani ?Stanford-he
who bad sought my life-but great
Heavens! There was no head on his
body! My fingers were clotted with
something warm and sticky-and over
como by tbo terrible revelation it made
to me, I lost all consciousness.
Wheu I carno to myself, I was lying on
a settee iu the station, and a great crowd
filled the room. I told my story-by
degrees-as I could remember it, and I
could see that my listeners believed it.
It was settled, beyond doubt, that Stan?
ford had changed tho lights. He had
been seen to do it by one of the em?
ployees of. th o road, a stupid fellow, who
did not think of any harm coming from
it. His object was plain enough to mc,
though I never spoke of it to any one.
Ho hated mc-he was jealous of my gain?
ing popularity, and be wonted to ruin
me in the estimation of tho company
and in tho estimation of Florence and
her father, lint ho was dead, and when
I thought of tho fearful manner of his
death, I forgave Lim freely.

ried Florence Wayne, and I need not tell
you that I am happy.
