strong, it seems, for tbe Pope and the
altramontanists. Tho Connell was con?
vened for the purpose of proclaiming the
doctrine of papal infallibility, at least,
for thiB bhieny. It was a hard blow when
tbe Fulda bishops spoke ont against it.
It woe harder still when Von Janus came
out thunderingly. lb was discouraging
to see tho most popular preacher in Paris
break off from the dischaigo of his du?
ties, for the reason that he thought the
Council wns about to befool, if not min
the Church. The heaviest blow of all
was dealt by M. Dapanlonp, Bishop of
Orleans, who is at once a favorite with
the Pope and a powerful churchman. In
our correspondent's letter of yesterday,
it is made plain that Dapanlonp hos, as
nearly as possible, killed infallibility.
Then again, we find that the Russo
Polish clergy have instructed their dele?
gates to vote against infallibility, against
the union of Ob arch and State, in favor
of a more elevated order of education
for the clergy, and against the organiza?
tion of the College of Cardinals and its
nresent exclusiveness.

GIFT ENTERPRISE SWINDLERS.-The
"dead beats" or "gift enterprise swin?
dlers" are about to be hoisted on their
own petards. The game is up with
them. The Postmaster-General has
issued instructions that all letters ad?
dressed to the swindling concerns in the
city, well known to tho employees of the
office, shall be sent to the Dead Letter
Office at Washington. This blocks tho
gift enterprise swindlers. A good job.
Let us have a few more of the kind.

ACCIDENT ON THE RAILROAD.-We are
informed by passengers on tho South
Carolina Bailroad that on Friday even?
ing au accident occurred at Aiken, S. C.,
by which a colored mon was mortally
wounded. As the train was moving off,
the injured man endeavored to j amp
from the platform. He fell on the track,
under the ears, and wbilo endeavoring to
crawl out was run over. His left arm
and leg were completely severed from the
body, and no hopes were entertained for
his life.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT.-On Christmas a
number of little boys, in Charleston,
were playing in the yard of Mr. David
Briggs, with a toy caution manufactured
from tho barrel of an old musket. An
accidental discharge resulted in the se?
rious wounding of a son of Captain Tom
Daniels. Three shots were lodged in his
head, ono in the eye ball. Every assist?
ance was afforded the little sufferer, and !
yesterday some hopes of his recovery
wera entertained.
MORE INCENDIARISM.-The barn and
stables of Mr. Benjamin R. Cockrell,
near Blackstock, were destroyed by fire,
on Thursday night lost, together with
his entire crop of corn and fodder.
About six hundred bushels of corn wore
burned. It was with great difficulty that
the mules were saved. We hope that
the scoundrel may bo detected and meet
his just reward.- WinusLoro Neus.
John Dickey, the murderer of his
wife, Mary Ann Dickey, at Bombay, N.
J., on the night of Monday, November 1
last, and who for his crime was adjudged
guilty of murder (in the first degree at
Hackensack on Wednesday evening, has
appealed his own caso to that court whore
no writ of errors are required or granted
he committed suicide by hanging, in his
cell, on the 23d.
A Pittsburg oroide young man asked a
girl whom he hud beou following, andan
entire stranger to him, to see her home.
She accepted, and on arriving At her I
home, set her dog on him. He left his j
hat, coattail, and a piece of round steak
inside the yard. He now sits down with !
difficulty, and has a pillow under the spot. \

charge of murdering his wife on tho
plea of insanity, and has just killed an?
other wife in Illinois, formerly resided
in Chester Connty, Pa., and killed two
women there before going West.
M. William Johnson, a farmer in
Jackson County, Missouri, has twenty
hogs, the average weight of which ex?
ceeds five hundred pounds, gross. He
has beeu offered fifty dollurs a head or
one thousand dollars for twenty hog.j.
Mr. Bergh has notified the Brooklyn
authorities that cows arc stabled in that
"City of Churchos" in such a way that
they actually rotten aud die while hoing
milked, and he wants tho human brutes
sent to Sing Sing, whens they properly
belong.
On Tuesday, Jean Jourde, nn employee
of the Western Union Telegraph Com?
pany, fell from the sixth-story window of
the telegraph building in St. Louis, and
was instantly killed, He fell a distance
of eighty feet.
A colored waiter, in a Washington
saloon, having had some difficulty with
his employer, mixed arsenic with the
sugar. About thirty persons were
poisoned, fortunately nome of them
fatally.
John E. Parklan, of Triadelphia, Vir*
ginia, was instantly killed, on Saturday,
while trying to get on a train of cars in
motion.
