Asa journalist, whose doty it is to forward evviry goOd and nsefol work, we feel that ?a ban on this morning engage in no train of thought, more suitable to the day than that pertaining to these associ? ations. Turning aside, therefore, from the beaten track of political reflections, Hiting ourselves and onr readers above the conflicts and antagonisms of ordinary life, let ns consider the spirit and the end of these Christian Associations. In tho first place, as we conceive, those associations are uot sectarian in charac? ter. .They embrace all those who accept tho teachings of the Bible os the rule of lils and tho standard of honor. Their great purpose is to exert au active influ? ence npon the young. They seek to draw tho yoong man from the tempta? tions that beset him, and from the haunts of vice and dissipation that surround him. They seek thus to purify, to dignify and to adorn a career which otherwise might be characterized by thc marks of. shame and crime. And in lieu of tho pleasures that vicious indul? gence affords, they present the solid and substantial enjoyment of mental im? provement and refined social iutercoursc. Wo need.not suggest bow superior these intellectual and moral entertainments are to thbse pleasures which are of the earth, aud therefore "earthy" "The beingB of the miud are not of clay Essentially immortal;, they create within UM A brighter ray and more beloved existence." In flue, these associations tend emi? nently to soften life's asperities; to ele? vate tho tone; to dignify the ambition, and to improve the citizenship of all within their influence. It may bo said, that the elements of a well-ordered life consist in a sonnd body, a pure heart, and a olear aud vigorous mind. These elements are all fostered by the Young Men's Christian Association. It is the temperate, chaste and regular habits of theyoath, that give the sound mind in the sound body and the lofty soul to animate both, and it is tho combination of these triple qualities, that gi vo thc world assurance of the mau. Let these Chris? tian Associations he encouraged. They prepare the youth for the citizenship of life, and they help to prepare him, also, for tho eternal citizenship of Heaven. ? ?+ - Says Charles Sumner: "Especially do I plead for the African, not only among ns, a but in his own vast, mysterious home, where, for uukuown centuries, he lias been tho prey of the. spoiler." Why especially? Is he any better than thc whiteman? Is he moro deserving? Mr. Sumner forgets that the African has al? ways preyed upon himself, and thal every iota he has displayed of advance? ment, either morally, physically or in telieciuaiiy, is due to the "spoiler" h( refers to so oontomptuously. The learned gentleman's idea of "caste" is curious. He would abolish all distinctions at tin expense of the highest, reduce society tc one dead, ubject lovel, of which thi African negro, with his fondness for dir and cold missionary, would be the staud ?rd; and of whom, he says: "The Afri can, more than the European, is formet by n at uro for the Christian graces." Adj ou rn od. Fon THE LADIES-FASHIONS IN WISTES CLOAKS.-Suits aro so m nob worn that the demand for heavy cloaks is hot very great, but handsome ones are on exhibi? tion. A heavy beaver cloak is out fitting at the back and loose ia front, and trim? med with satin folds. Another is loose, cut out slightly ot the sides of the back, those seams being covered with two folds of silk with satin cord. An oddity is loose aud quiet deep ut the back, short square in front, and caught np ut thc sides in plaits. The cloak has dec? fringe around it. A basque, imported from Paris, has fire narrow satin folds down tho centre of the back, to edge, and throe rows covering thc sides form scams. The back is deep and rounding; the sides shorter, and nearly covered hy folds run? ning across. Deep bullion cluster fringo is set around tho skirt. A loose suck, the old style, is trimmed with silk, and hasXeilk buttons in front. A novelty is a basque with a square hood at the back, with tassels falling from it, and heavily embroidered. This is trimmed with fringe, and the sleeves arc long aud wide like the old-fashioned flowing sleeves. Mr. G. dis? covered eyes, ordered his son to hold the dog and started in the direction of the eyes; but the eyes disappeared, and, after looking around for some time, started baok, when ho discovered a pair of eyes, whiah he took to be the oyes of a deer; he fired and went up to see what he had killed, and found that he bsd shot his own son. Jackson, o Richland street, was entered by an ui welcome individual, and robbed of eev ral artioles-among them a silver doilt ring, marked "E. H." The thief wi apparently very deliberate in his oper? tions; as a chair was found by the dime table, and the remains of a box of sa dines, bread, meat, etc., on it.
