away in little hallways, in dark base?
ments, or up two or three fights of stairs
in some, large building where there is
likely to ba a great deal of trafila on
other accounts. Tho extent of their
profit is almost fabulous, for, being in an
illegitimate business, conceived and
carried in deception' and fraud, these
dealers hare no scruples abont the means
of disposing of their wares. Indeed, so
extensive is the business transacted by
some of ih? bogus watoh dealers, that
one of them on Broadway boldly pro?
claims the character of his trade, and
yet, we understand, sells from $30,000 to
$40,000 worth a monto. Poor humanity

NOVEL BUT EFFICIENT.-A casual visi?
tor at one of our excellent city schools
was somewhat surprised, tho other day,
to see a boy standing on the floor, hold?
ing in his mouth a piece of lath about
six inches long. Our iuformaut gazed at
the novel spectacle iu wondering silence;
the boy was as solemn as an owl, aud
his eye wandered scrutinizingly around
the room, while the quiet scholars
scarcely glanoed at him. At length the
youth called the attention of tho teacher
to the fact that a certain scholar was
whispering. The delinquent was called
up and relieved tho lath holder, aud be?
gan looking for some offender to take
his place. Wo recommend this method
to teachers troubled with noisy schools;
it certainly worked to a churni in the
cass above mentioned. This is the latest
plan out and decidedly the best.

ried a Mormon lady is in some dread of
the "blood atonement." He describes
the peculiar institution as follows: "Well,
these fellows got a grudge nguiusta mau,

blood, and then some of tho ciders have
a revelation that the man's got to bo got
out of the way, and thoy go for him.
'Taint no use, then. These revelations
do the business for him. Man's found
dead, throat cut, or something of the
sort, and that's the last of it. Nobody
knows anything about it, and if you
critch 'em at it 'taint no use-they all
stand by each other."
DROWNED.-Oliver B. Brunner, on
Tuesday night last, got up out of his
bed, and undressed as he was, walked
out of the house and across the field,
about half a mile, into Bull Swamp, and
into Bull Swamp Creek, where he was
drowned. The unfortunate young man
was subject to epileptio fits, and it is sup?
posed that he was suffering from one of
these fits whon ho was drowned. Wm.
R. Treadwell, Esq., Coroner, held an
inquest over the body yesterday morn?
ing. The vordiot of the jury was that
deceased came to his death by accidental
drowning.-Orangeburg Hews.

nightfall, and nearly all of her bair was
