United States from foreign countries for the quarter ending September 80, bns been received from sil tho customs dis? tricts: The total arrivals wera 116,371 persons, of whom 101,342 were perma? nent emigrante, 11,990 citizens of the United States retnrning from abroad, and 3,039 foreigners not intending to remain. Of the immigrants. 60,959 wore moles, 40,383 females; 23,291 were under fifteen years of age, 65,070 between fifteen and forty, 12,981 upwards of forty; 70,986 arrived at the port of New York, 10,621 at Port Huron, 10,238 at Boston, 5,391 at San Francisco, 1,414 at Detroit. Tho remaining -arrivals were principally at Philadelphia, Portland, New Orleans and Key West. As usual of late, tho Ger? man element predominates, although the immigrants from Scandinavian conntries are increasing. Tho Chinese arriving at San Francisco numbered 5,104, showing a slight decrease from last quarter. Rather a larger portion than usual of the immigrants is made up of professional men, tradesmen and skilled mechanics. The New York Herald, commenting on this, says: "The immigration statistics show that within the quarter including July, Au? gust and September over 100,000 immi? grants arrived at the different ports with a view to permanent settlement in this country. This is a valuable increase to our population, not only because of tho actual money whioh these people bring with them-and that is considerable but it is valuable for tba new industries whioh it will develop and tho additional force it will impart to the work daily foing on npon our vast Western fields, f this immigration were to settle down in the large Atlantic cities, the advantage of so large an accession of strangers might be dubious; but fortunately there are now ia existence organized societies, both here and in the Western States, to direct them to places where their labor and whatever small capital they possess can be employed to the best profit for themselves and the country. Immi? grants, therefore, soon find their way to those inviting regions on both sides of the Mississippi, where their labor be? comes immediately productive and remu? nerative. There is a good deal more to be done yet in providing information and means for these people to find their way to the West. The Germans-who, during the past quarter exceeded any other na? tionality-are pretty well cared for iu this respect by societies located in Hamburg, Antwerp and other cities. But the Irish immigrant element is not so well pro? vided for. Here there is large room for improvement." A correspondent, writing from Bluck shear, Ga., under date of November 30, says: "Mrs. Elizabeth Henrington was born in Barnwell Distriot, S. C., A. D. 1747, the 12th day of January of said year, and departed this life ou the 20th of November, 1869, at the resideuco of her son-in-law, Wm. G. Biggins, of Pierce County, Ga. She enjoyed good health, aud walked without any help to within a few days of her death. She; lived 122 years, 10 months, and 8 days, according to my calculations." PRINTING EXTRAVAGANCE.-Tho annual expenditures for Congressional priutiug run up now to the enormous figures of S2.000.000. Before tho war, when the Southern members, aided by a few honest members from the North and West, had the control of this business, $200,0001 was considered a large sum for this ser vice. j A lunatic at Seymour, Ind., put one end of au old gun-barrel in the fire, aud looked down the muzzle with one eye to see if it was loaded. It was the opinion of the parties who picked tho man's brains np on a dust-pan, that tho gun was loaded, and the coroner's jory concurred. AMERICANISMS.-The telegraph opera? tors have invented the word "suicided." Somebody else speaks of tho President as having "excurted," and now wo read that Erie was "injuncted." Is anybody ahead of us in reporting that Miss Evans has Yashtied? Resolutions have been introduced into the North Carolina Legislature looking to the indemuity of loyal citizens by the National Government for property, other than slaves, taken during tho war for the use of the Union armies. The managers of tho Pacific Railroad aro preparing fuel and provision cars to run with every train duriug tho winter, so that in case a train gets snowed in, tho passengers will not freeze or starve to death. An Ottawa paper tries to awaken the town of Aylmer to the necessity of en? couraging the construction of a wooden railway, by tho stirring appeal-"awake, arise, or be forever fallen!" A man in Indianapolis found a neigh? bor's gold ring in his pork barrel, and tho neighbor is in a sweat to find ont how it got there. C. H. Needles, Jr., of Philadelphia, has arrived in Washington with a peti? tion two miles long, asking Congress to concede the rights of belligerents to Cuba.
