committeth adultery."
At Richardson's funeral, Parson Bee?

The total amount received on accoun

HINTS TO CODIFIERS AND LEGISLATORS.

State. That office is now kept at Co?
lombia, aud it is greatly inconvenient
and expensive to require citizens, scat?
tered all over the State, to have convey?
ances and assignments, of tho descrip?
tion above mentioned, recorded at a
distance from their homes, when, iu (ach
Couuty, there is already a record office
in Charleston aud Georgetown Counties,
the Office of Register of Mesno Convey?
ance, and in the other Counties of the
State, the Office of tho Clerk of the
Court of Common Pleas. Wo would
therefore suggest to the Legislature, now
in spssion, to pass an Act, making the
Clerk's Offices, in the several Counties of
the State, except Charleston and George?
town Counties, the Record Offices, for
all deeds, whether of real or porsoual
estate, and discontinuing the Office of
Secretary of State as a Record Office.
It will be requisite or proper, also, to
direct the Books of Record, now in the
Office of tho Secretury of State, to be
removed to the proper Becord Offices in
the several Counties. The Office of Se?
cretary of State should never have been
a Becord Office-it is ruther a Cabinet
Office, and somewhat belittled, by mak?
ing it a Becord Office, for which it is by
no means fitted or proper.

WHEREAS, information has been officially
communicated to this Department, that
an atrocious murder was committed on the
night of thc 7th of Decomber last, ou the body
or SAMUEL H. DUNWOODY, at Newberry,
near the Greenville and Columbia Railroad
Depot, by persons unknown.
Now know ye, that I,RORERT K. SCOTT,
Governor of tho State of South Carolina, in
order that justice may bo done, and the ma?
jesty of tho law vindicated, do hereby offer a
reward of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for the
apprehension and delivery, in any jail ia this
State, of tho murderor or murderers of the
said Samuel H. Dunwoody, with proof to con?
vict; anda proportionate reward will bc paid
for any information that may lead to their
arrest aud conviction.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my
hand, and causod the great seal of the State
to bo arlixed, at Columbia, this 10th day of
" December, A. D. 1809, and in tho ninety
fourth year of tho independence of the
United States of America.
