In the same spirit it may. bo said by the Southern pa? triot--give me the brains and the money j and ? will redeem and restore the South as if by magio power. We mean this. Here at the South we have ail the ele? ments of strength-a people brave-heart? ed, spirited, full of indomitable pluck a climate genial, a soil teeming with mineral and agricultural wealth-water power without limit. We have, in fine, all ?? the niornontn that go tc make up natural wealth and natural power. What now ia needed to u tili zo these ad van tages, to give ns the fruits of the tree? We answer-intelligence directing the work of material development, and enthusiasm to carry it on, and energy to press it, and perseverance to go on pressing it. Let this be done. To our brain power, and our muscle power, let our money power j be ednoed, and the "poor South" will be the "poor South" no longer; and the j "oppressed South" will be lif tod up, and again the Southern man will stand with pride upon his native soil, and Bhare in the spirit of an elevated and elevating | , independence. One thing more. Let it not be forgot? ten that to the element intellectual, and ' the element material, must be added the yet nobler element-the element moral. Let it be ever borne in mind that right? eousness exalteth a nation, and that sin is a reproach to any people. Whilst, then, we seek, as a public journalist, to impel the car of material aud moral pro? gress, it ia due to ourselves to say, that rising above all other considerations, is the consideration ol the public virtue and the public morals. This element is the great preserver. It is the grand conserving principle. And that people who would purohaso wealth and power at the expense of public and private virtue, would obtain them at a sad and ever-to-be-regretted cost ? ? ? ? SOOIAXI STATIC OF FBANCE.-M. Provost ParadoL one of the keenest and most practical of the, publio men of France, has been delivering a lecture in Edin? burgh on the "Sooiul State of France." He particularly addressed himself to the task of showing how erroneous were the ideas that commonly prevailed outside of that country regarding the looseness of the conjugal relations, and the want of real affection in the family among the Frenoh people. He deolared that in no land were children loved by their pa? rents with greater tenderness than in France; that this parental affection was, indeed, oft-times excessive. He explain? ed how the families were generally small by crediting it to the fact that the French are remarkably prudent and thrifty, and habitually oxeroiso great forethought in regard to their pecuniary affairs, and accordingly limit the number of their ohildren to what they can with certainty provide a maintenance and inheritance for. With regard to the currently re? ported looseness of tho marriage tie in France, M. Pr?vost Paradol asserted that not a thousandth part of all that is said and written in that strain had any foundation in troth. Divorces are un? known, and the same clear-headedness and self-control which enable a French woman to contract a thrifty marriage, coable her to make the best of whatever lot afterwards may befall her. -?-??-> WHY CUBANS AUE TN REBELLION.-The Cuban Junta have lately completed a list of statistics, by which they show that the section of Cuba under the dominion of the repnblic, covers 23,895 square miles, has a population of 522,598, with 656 sugar plantations, 220 coffee planta? tions, and 2,747 plantations of tobacco. The party yet under tho dominion of Spain is computed to contain 11,862 square miles; 571,396 inhabitants; 759 sugar plantations, 153 of which have been con?seated and 160 destroyed; 776 coffeo plantations, and 9,475 tobacco planta? tions. Among the latter population aro comprehended 271,571 slaves, and 3,308 emancipated negroes. The colored in? habitants of tho republic number 208, 608, all being free. The isthmus connecting North und South America, it is assorted, caa be canalled without any greater difficulty than the Isthmua of Suez, which is seventy-two miles in width. The Isthmus of Panama is only twenty-eight milos wide, and the Nicaragua route up the River San Juan would only require the construction of a oanal sixteen miles long, tho remainder of tho ronte being, by way of Lako Nicaragua, ninety miles long, and the River San Juan. The Tehuantepeo route, 130 miles across, from sea to sea, it is asserted, lies throughout ulong the Coatzacoulcos ivor. ' Befitting it is, that tho poet's conntrymon and admirers should ever keep it in remembrance; but the question is, how to do this most appro? priately and appreciatively. Yes, all this let us oommemorate, by holding out the hand of encouragement to some struggling child of want, like himself, and the money spent for that which de? grades men and breaks women's hearts, let it bo given to educate some poor boy, who may yet be the Burns of America. Two men, Bennett and May, suitors for the hand of the same woman, in Richboro, Pennsylvania, engaged in a fight, when May, who was the weakest, feigned intoxication, and appealed suc? cessfully to his antagonist to desist. As Bennett stooped to pick up his coat, May stabbed him twice with a knife he had whetted for tho purpose, and killed him instantly. A family named Parnell, from Dar? lington, while on their way to Missouri, camped at Cherokee Pond, on the night of the 3d, and while in camp were fired upon by un unknown man, on a gray bone, and a young child badly hurt. No clue to the would-be assassin. A SINOUIIAK COINCIDENCE.-A lady olerk in the third auditor's office, who lost three sons in the war, has had laid on her desk, for adjustment, the accounts of one of hor deceased sons, who was a quartermaster. She is now engaged in their examination. A colored family entered an opera house at New Orleans by one door, and tho balance of the audience went out by the other, and demanded their money. The managers saw the point. HEAVY: SUIT.-The heirs of Wm. Win? chester, a native of Baltimore, and one of the early founders of Memphis, have brought suit for a quantity of the most valuable property in that city. A white train-hand, named Iverson Dupre, employed on tho Georgia Central Railroad, was crushed to death, near Millen, a fow days ago. Mrs. Mary Clemens, of Tel fair County, who died on the 15th ult., 104 years old, was the InBt revolutionary pensioner in Georgia. The last performance of Robinson's oireus eame off last night. To-morrow they open in Lexington. Two colored boys were knocked down and robbed last night, near the State House. We are rapidly approaching city fashions. The Hon. John Townsend, of Edisto, expects to receive from twenty to twenty five Chinese laborers during tho present month, and a planter on tho Savannah River has provided for a Chinese colony of from 200 to 300. A shooting affray occurred last night, near tho circus tent, between several negro boys, in which one of them, named Georgo Dial, was, it is supposed, mortally wounded. Two boys, one named Cute Smith, believed to have been engaged in the difficulty, were ar? rested by Chief Radcliffe. Or it is some luxury for the table that you can do ns well without. Think, therefore, before you spend your money. Or need a now carpet, new couch, new chairs or new dress; you are tempted to buy something a little handsomer than you had at first intoeded* and, while you hesitate, the dealer Bays to you: "Tis only a trifle more, and see how far pret? tier it is!" But, before you purchase, stop to think. Will you be better a year heneo, especially in old age, for having squandered your money? Is it not wiser to lay by something for a rainy day? All these luxuries will only gratify you for the moment. You soon tire of them, and their own permanent effect is to con? sume your menus. It is by such little extravagances-not much separately, but ruinous in the aggregate-that the great majority of families are kept compara? tively poor. The first leeson to learn is to deny yourself useless expenses, and the first step toward learning this lesson I is to think before you spend.
