Oar city on Thnraday wa? the scene Of
ona Of those heart-rending occurrences,
a death by hydrophobia. The victim of
the fearful malady was a yoong man by
tho naroo of John Alexander, son of Mr.
J. W. Alexander, who formerly kept a
confectionery on Limestone street, be?

of the sad ease are most distressing.
Tho young mau had boen bitten by a
rabid dog as long ago as the night of the
20th of last August. Whilo walking
along Third street a dog ran out of au
alley, r and, without even a premonitory
bark, silently but fiercely seized bimby

.the boot. Mr. Alexander suooeeded m
kicking bim off, but he came at him
again, and bit his hand, the teeth meet?
ing through it. He did not know at the
time thr.t th? dog ?*&a ?uad. He sought
professional advice, bot was assured
by the physicien that he waa in no dan?
ger.
The Boratohes and wounds healed
quickly, and he thought no more about
the matter until last Tuesday night,
when, after being initiated a member of
the Ashland Lodge of Oood Templars,
be experienced, on taking a drink of
water, a most singular and unpleasant
feeling in his throat, but he soon got
over it. He was troubled with nothing
more unpleasant until Wednesday after?
noon at about 6 o'clock, when, on again
attempting to take a glass of water, he
found that he oould not drink. He then
immediately suspected the cause of his
sickness, and determined to fully test it.
He tried to force water into his month
with a spoon, but his erm gave a spas?
modic jerk, sending the spoon flying
through the air, and he fell back un?
nerved and wild and sick, both from the
effects of the malady and the horrible
certainty of his rapidly approaching
fate.
He was confined to his bcd all Weduea
.day night. On Thursday morning he
got rapidly worse, and continued to suffer
most terribly till the time of his death.
The agony he endnred no words can de?
scribe; nud the physician, attending him
said bis were the most fearful sufferings
they hod ever witnessed. He howled,
and snarled, and barked, like a dog.
He scratched and clawed at the bed
clothing until it was almost torn to
shreds. ' Spasms and convulsions suc?
ceeded each other, racking bis tortured
body and causing him to foam at the
month like a wild and rabid animal; and
in bis frenzy the veins would swell like
they would burst, and he would bark and
cough as though his lungs would be
forced np, and blood would gush in
streams from his mouth and nostrils.
The bed on which he waa held down by
strong men was saturated through and
through with the crimeon stream.
Strange to say, ho was conscious nearly
the entire time, and, devoted and self
sacrificing, he firmly insisted that none
of his agonized and weeping relatives
should be allowed to come near him, as
he was afraid he might injare them.
His father, who hod been absent, arrived
a little while before his death, but ou
being told that he had oome, he ex?
claimed: "Don't let bim see me."
At abont 2 o'clock bis suffering be?
came even moro intensified, and he
screamed and shrieked "Water! water!
force it down mel Oh, Death! hurry,
hurry." His attendant physicians, wbo
hod done all in their power to alloviate
his sufferings, again administered chlo?
roform most copiously, and its soothing
and pain-deadening effects came with
tbrioe blessed power, breaking tho force
of the last fearful moments of suffering,
and the unfortunate viotim of that most
horrible of all maladies, hydrophobia,
escaped from his tortures st a quarter
past 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Alexander was only nineteen years
old, had lately joined the Baptist Church,
and was known as a most excollent and
industri?os young mau. He frequently
pointed his finger heavenward just be?
fore he died, and declared his desire to
be at rest. His invalid mother uud all
his e'ricken family have the lively sym?
pathies of tho whole community.

WHAT HORSES BRINO.-Horses of great
reputation have always commanded great
prices. At Newmarket, in 1805, a bay
colt by Pipate sold for 875,000. In the
same year a two year old colt by Ben
ingborougb, a two year old by Volunteer,
and a three year old filly by Sir Peter,
wore sold for $75,0 0 each. For tbe cele?
brated horse Shark $50,000 were refused,
and O'Kelly declined to accept an offer
of $100,000 for his stallion Eclipse. Tra?
dition says that the Duke of Devonshire
refnssd for Flying Childers the weight of
the horse in gold. A few years ago, the
great aire Stockwell could not be bought
for $100,000, and we presume that when
Gladiateur was carrying everything
before him on tho Engiiah turf, the
Count de La Grange would not have
parted with him for $150,000. Coming
to America, we find that nearly $15,000
were paid for Lexington, aud that his
son, Kentucky, was sold for $40,000.
Mr. Alexander refused $50,000 for Aste?
roid, Kentucky's half brother, and
Norfolk, another half brother, was valued
at $40,000. Mr. Bonner paid $85,000 for
Dexter, and offers $100,000 for ono that
can equal Dexter's wagon time.
A little six-year-old was wslking with
his father, and passing a ohuroh, the
obild asked: "What house is that?"
"That is the Dutch Church." wss the re?
ply; "people go there to be good, so
that they may become angels." "Will
there be Dutch angels, pa?" That ohild
should be sent to Sunday-sohool.

fit by this discovery. Tho composition
oan be applied to the finest needles and
small olook wheels. It is said to improve
the temper of knife or sword blades also.
A "gentleman from Ireland," employ?
ed as a mason tender, procured from n
spring water for his mortar; and by dip?
ping a lime bucket into the spring,
caused the death of two pet gold fishes.
When rebnked, he drew himself up and
replied, "Is it tho yellow fish ye mane?
