Hickman, a citizen of Alabama, sued the
officers of the court and grand jury of his
County, for arrest and imprisonment for
treason against tho Confederate States.
The verdiet -was for the defendants.

term of Barnwell Court, Judge Platt, in
his charge to the jury in the Sleepy Hol?
low tragedy cases, made a very pretty
little Bpeeoh. The correspondent re?
ports: "He said that, to Ina mind, tho
signs of the times wero cheering, oleo
of both parties in the South wero taking
a more rational and comprehensive view
of the situation, and were gradually cast?
ing aside old prejudices and uniting their
efforts for the common good of the State.
He thought that at no distant day, in?
deed he looked forward with pleasure wi td>
the belief that in another year, nil o{.^ue
offices in the State would be filled b> inf

men. He was listeued to with marked,
attention, and has gained tho respect oh
many who had hitherto looked upon him
as upon all whom the results of the war

THULABOH MOVEMENT IN TUB STATU.
We see that a movement has beeu set on
foot by a committee of Republicans, to
hold a convention of the working classes
in Columbia, on the 24th instant, for the
purpose of regulating tho subject of
wages. This movement, wc think, can
only embarrass tho relations between |
embloyer and employee, without affect
ing any permanent good to tho laborers.
Circumstances may justify these combi?
nations, aud trades una professions may
find it necessary to take mensures to se
cure their dignity and integrity. But no
factitious appliances eau give more than
its market value to labor, aud it is more
than folly to attempt to adjust the unre?
liable ngrioulturnl labor of tho emanci?
pated slavo especially, to any graduated
scale of prices. The upshot ol it all will
be, that ns in the waiters' strike iu New
York, the employer will be forced to im?
port cheap labor-Chinese perhaps-at
any rate, cheap labor.
