Homo Kntrrprlse. ? ? ^~ It is said, to the reproach of oar South? ern people, that they are slow to en? courage the efforts of native genius and native enterprise. We fear that this is too true. The idea unfortunately pre? vails with ?onie that nothiug can he good unless itoomee from abroad. This is tue result of our long continued industrial and literary vassalage. If a man brings out a home rondo buggy, or wagon, or hat, or shoe, he has to contend with the notion that it is perhaps somewhat de? fectivo. This holds good especially with books. Hard is the struggle to introduce Southern books into our sohools and households. So long have we been de? pending upon the North for our text? books, that we have rendered our condi? tion, in this respect, somewhat humili? ating. Take a casa near homo. Messrs. Duffie it Chapman, of this city, have, *i great expense, published a serios of Southern books, by Southern writers sq?h as Pr of osssor Reynolds' Beaders and Professor Davidson's School History, and yet we doubt if they seil these books as readily as they oaght. They deserve well of, the Southern public, aud the anthers of the South should have a fair showing, at least, in their own section. Now, we desire to bo understood on this point, and on tho first point we made. We are not contracted in our propo? sitions. We are willing for buggies and books made at the North, and those made at the South, to stand upon their merits. Bat, other things being equal, we hold that it is-our duty and our pol ? icy to give the preference to home-made productions. Particularly does this hold in this respect, to primary text-books. How humiliating to. think, that one's child is to accept the one-sided and men? dacious view of his section, which is often found contained in the Northern text? book that he is using. Let our people see to it that the young get truth, and not falsehood. . Let tho Southern boy get Southern pabulum to feed upon. Let him be brought, at least, to have a loyal reverence for the past, and he will be prepared to meet, with becoming spirit, the duties of the present and of the future. We repeat, it is due to our? selves to give ample encouragement to native efforts, in whatever field we find them employed. Honor to the work-men of the South-whether they work with brains or with muscle. BUSINESS CARDS AND CIRCUI?ARS.-As the season is approaching for the annual travel and distribution of business cards and oiroulars, our merchants and others will please give attention to the fact that our job office is supplied with the best of boards, of all colors, fine commercial note aud other paper, and the very new? est and most fashionable styles of type, thus enabling us to supply all of such wants. AOCTOENT IN A SlT/VER M IN'Ii IN MEPICO -ONE II UNDI JED PERSONS CRUSHED TO DEATH, ?rc.-A letter from Mexico states that, on the 9th inst., one hundred men, women and children were crushed to death by the falling in of a silver minc at Guanajuato while the miners were eating their dinners, just brought them by their families. The day following the mine disaster, sixteen women, six children and twelve meu were drowned in the river Merceata. They had reached the river bank and sat down to rest be? fore undertaking to ford the river, which was swollen by rains, the bank suddenly slid off from the maia land into the stream and every one perished. Tho bodies were found lower down the stream. A St. Paul paper says: "Some years since, a lady, who had been a teacher, married a missionary and went to India. Among other acquaintances, she met a gentleman connected with tho British army. In her possession wero pictures of several friends and acquaintances in this State, whioh she exhibited to this gentleman. Ono of her pictures was of a Miss Jennie Shaw, of Lakeland, Min? nesota. It pleased him so well that he at once opened a correspondence, which finally oultimatod ia an ongagemout. Last February, he arrived herc, und im? mediately went over to Lakeland to visit his affianced. Both were so well pleased, that a marriage between them was con? summated in a few weeks." The poor people of Ireland are begin? ning to go to Africa to live, believing that they can do bettor there than at home, should even tho land bill pass. It is a great pity-not to Buy sim me, that these poor people cannot bo enabled to live in comfort upon the soil of their nativity. How THE WESTERN STATES GROW. In 1850, Illinois had a population of 851,000; Missouri of 082,000, and Iowa of 192,000. Ten years later, the popula? tion of Illinois and of Missouri had dou? bled, and that of Iowa had increased nearly fourfold. The railroad system effected these great ohanges. In 1870, Iowa will have a population of 1,200,000. Five railroads are being constructed East and West across tho State, and others are anticipated. ss?ammssssssssBsssssa i i ? Negotiations were going on between the rival chiefs, and at one time 1.000 puns of palm oil wore de? manded from Ja Ja; .subsequently the quantity was reduced to twenty, emt it was generally believed that by the inter? vention of tue traders and the presence of ono of Her Majesty's ships at Bonny, amioable arrangements wonld be con? cluded botween the Manila Pepplo peo? ple and the Ja Ju's. The destruction of the town of Bonny was almost complete, one side of it being entirely swept away, whilo other parts aro in a state of wreck. The guns, which ranged from thirty-six poundcrs to sixty-eight-poouders, wore fired at the extraordinary short range of ICO yards, with heavy charges of gripe and canister, and tho havoc was fearful. Tho bush wus crowded with fugitives men, women and children-many being wounded in a shocking manner. Hun? dreds of dead and wounded were lying j about the beach, while numbers of dead bodies, in clusters of three or four, wero floating about in tho creek. It was stated that Ja Ja had about DUO men kill? ed outright, and about threo cr four times as many put 7iors du combat. It is stated that tho Postmaster-Gou eral will soon issuo an order prohibiting the carriage through tho mails of circu? lara gotten up by swindling firms for tho purpose of defrauding the public. Some twonty of these firms are on tho place list of Government detectives. Borne interference of this kind is greatly needed. The extensive drug establishment of J. R. Zelin & Co., in Macon, Qa., was par? tially destroyed by fire on Thursday last. The loss is estimated nt between $25,000 and $30,000 oh tho stock of drugs, medi? cines, paints, Seo., and at least $1,500 on tho building. SPAIN AND SICKLIES.-The Now York Evening Post, without naming Sickles, is showing how he has damaged Cuba by inspiring the Spanish Government with zeal to send out troeps there. His reck? lessness, it is urged, made Spuiu mad, and united the Spaniards. A poor fellow in San Francisco, unable to get work, wrote a note stating that ho was going to "make application fora plaoe os fireman to tho devil," and took arsenic.
