The State Agricultural and Mechani?
cal Society, was organized in Columbia
in April last, and it waa determined that
the first annual fair should be held in
that city in November. It was thought
by-many that neither the Fair buildings,
nor tho articles for exhibition, could be
made ready in BO short a time, and that
the people were not yet alive to the im?
portance of such gatherings. But tho
expectations of tho sanguine friends of
the movement have been fully realized.
Colombia-guided by the counsel of her
far-sighted merchants-erected, at great
expense, suitable buildings, and laid out
extensive grounds, in which to hold tho
Fair. And when the exhibition was for?
mally opened on Wednesday last, its
success was already assured. Thepeoplo
thronged to Columbia from every part
of the State, and the whole celebration
waa in every way creditable. Somo
counties were barely represented; the
sea-const could send nothing. But the
State at largo showed well in her manu?
factures, her cattle and stock, her house?
hold wares, ber cloths and yarns, her ve?
hicles and implements, and Charleston
stood in the front rank for mechanical
ability and manufacturing skill. The
premium list was large and generally ac?
ceptable, and the receipts of hard cash
larger than was expeoted.
Now that the first step hos boen made,
we trust that both farmers and manufac?
turers will go to work in earnest to make
the Fair in 1870 in every way worthy of
our' new-born State. There was somo
natural desire that tho Fair should bo
held next year in Charleston, but there
were good reasons why a central point
should be preferred, and Columbia has
acted with BO large and wiso a generosity
that it would be unseemly to suggest that
her noble Fair buildings should lie un?
occupied and idle, oven every alternate
year. Columbia has won tho Iionor, and,
we are sure, will wear it well.
The officers of the cociety have been
nntiribg in their efforts to make the Fair
both useful and successful. In tho faco
of many difficulties, and in spite of some
discouragement, they persevered to the
end, and it must he pleasant to them to
know that from the mountains to tho
seaboard the Fair of 1869 is spoken of
and regarded as a welcome victory over
lassitude and indifference, and as a good
omen of the dawning of brighter and
more prosperous days.-Charleston News.
ANOTHER HEAVY LOSS.-Weare grieved
to learn that the Becky Mount Cotton
Factory of Mr. W. S. Battle waa destroed
by fire about noon on Wednesday. But
a few weeks ago we recorded the loss by
fire of the gin-house and mills of Mr.
Battle, at the same place. The factory
was one of the most extensive in the
State, and gave employment to a large
number of persons in the locality. We
are glad to know that there was an insu?
rance of some $25,000, but this will cover
but a small portion of the loss. Mr.
Battle is ono of the most liberal, enter?
prising and publio spirited citizens of
the State, and he will have the sympathy
of all who know him iu this second mis?
