Resolved, That we organizo ourselves into a society, not to auy party whatever owing any allegiance, but for tho only object of freeing our State and city from its present corrupt rulers and placing honest and capable men in their places. Resolved, That we do pledge ourselves never to vote for any incompetent candi-*! date, -be he Republican or Democrat, for any office whatever, but to use all our in? fluence to defeat all such candidates, and elevating ta office only our own native and honest citizens aud such others as our own gentlemen may, in their wisdom, soe flt to recommend and support. The thorough organization of the club was thou effected by the eleotion of the following officers : A. L. Harper, Presi? dent ; A. Dean, first Vico-Presidont ; John Thomas, second vice-President ; Ii. J. Taylor, Secretary; Benjamin Brown, Treasurer ; W. G. Rout, Chairman of the Executive Committee. IMPORTANT UNDERTAKING.-The New York Tribune, referring to the obstruc? tions at Hell Gate, has the following item about a canal which it is proposed shall be built to avoid the danger at that point: W. W. Vanderbilt, late Constructing Engineer of tho Pacific Mail Steamship Company, has conceived a plan of exca? vating a canal through the promontory upon which Astoria stands, and thereby forming a straight course from the East River to the entrance to tho Sound, thus avoiding the crooked and dangerous channel now used by craft in entering the Sound from New York and viceversa. At first glauco this is a startling proposi? tion, yet upon examination the plan ap? pears not only feasible, but far more economical than any yet put for? ward. The work could bo accomplished with certainty, regardless of tide and weather, and could bo completed inside of two years, nt an estimated cost of not exceeding $3,000,000. The channel pro . pased would be about two thousand feet in length, six hundred feet in breadth, eqnal to the width between Blackwell's Island and ?oe kong Island shore, and with a depth at low tide of thirty-four feet, so that vessels of any draft and ton? nage could pass through at all times of tide, and by night as well as day in per feet safety. DANGER OF KEROSENE.-Last Wednes? day evening, at Harwich, Mass., two little girls, of six and four years, respec? tively, were loft with a kerosene lump burning in tho chamber , in whiqh they hsttb??? put, to bed. .The h ciao took fire and the children perished. They cannot tell their story, but all tho ap? pearances indicate that tho fire originat? ed in their room, tho lamp-flamo being the only Aro therein. There was proba? bly an explosion, with tho usual conse? quences. This might have boen occasioned in various ways known to those who ore familiar with the dangers of this method of artificial illumination. To add to the distress of this wretched "accident," the mothar of tho children, inconsolable for their loss, has beoome a maniac. LAWXKB G KART.-The Government has bad look with its indictments.. On Mon? day a culprit who had stolen $12,000 from tho Treasury was discharged on ac? count of a flaw in the indictment, mak? ing the fonrth discharge of this sort within a brief period, towit : one for $30,000, one for $200,000, ono for $30,000 and the fonrth for $12,000. Can't the District of Columbia obtain, sn attorney capable bf drawing an indictmout ? So long as justice shall depend aa it has hitherto done upon technicalities ?nd professional draft, both the 'Government and the people will stand a poor cilanco for enjoying its blessings. At half past six thirteen men and boj's had been let down, and tho remainder were ready to follow. Tho lamps were duly deliver? ed by tho lumpmnn, all being locked. Very naturally there was great excitement, but prompt steps were taken to ascertain tho extent of tho disaster, and, if possible, rescue tho unfortunate men. The bailiff, Mr. linker, descended tho Newbury pit, und ou eutering tho main level ho found that tho door which separated the pit had been destroyed, but he was enabled to Beoure tho frag? ments, and by these means to restore the ventilation to the McIntosh pit, the draught, it should be understood, being supplied by nu engine iuto tho latter pit, while tho outlet was at Newbury. "As soou as practicable, there were plenty of willing volunteers to descend tho pit iu search of their unfortunate comrades. It was somo timo ore any tid? ings reached the bank, nnd as tho shock had been felt for fully half a mile around, a great orowd had assembled, nnd a most agonizing scene ensued. The pit gave employment to fifty-five persons, and wives and children and mothers aud fathers tearfully awaited the result. When atlast thu first budy came up, the anguish of tho scene was, if possible, in? creased. A human form remained, und thut was about all. Tho features were scorched so as to bo almost unrecogniza? ble, and the clothes were burnt or torn apurt. Thus hour sifter hour tho sud work went ou, despair nnd hope alter? nating us the cage brought up its living, or mangled, or dead freight. The colliers of some of the other pita in the district had by somo means become aware of the calamity, und at ouce strack work to be? come .spectators of tho mournful work going on at McIntosh. It was a quarter past oue o'clock when tho last of the un? fortunates was brought np. In tho mean? while almost the entire medical staff of tho district had assembled, and the in? jured men were carefully tended and re? moved te their homes, where two of them died, nnd wo regret to hear that only oue is likely to survive.
