Tbc Terrible Drink.
Oh. th?drink, th? terrible drink.
Makins: oaoh oitj and town a sink
Of misery dim. and fearful to toll
Of the numborleea victims sent to hell.
Swearing, killing, crimea no lack;
The terrible drink makes night so black;
Tho curso of youth and decrepid age,
Adding to thirst instead of assuaged;
Continual drink tho drunkard's crave-,
Till it drags him down to an ?arly grave.
Oh, tho drink, the horrible drinkl
Seo tho child from the father ahrink,
As h* sisffgsra home from the night's debauch,
His soul on fire from the demon's torch.
Blindly, wildly, stumbling along,
Crazed with drink, intent on wrong;
And ?yen the dogs, with a bark and a bound,
Growl at tho man as he gropes around!
Thia Is the picture, deny it who can,
Of Gio downward steps of a fallen man.
Once h? was free from the vice, but ho fell- .
Foll, liko tho angola, from heaven to hell
Fell, to bo mocked at, scoffed at, and beat,
Mingling in filth in tho horrible atroot.
Pleading, eursiog, dreading tho worst,
Drinking still deeper, yet greater his thirst,
Tilt he slokens and falls, degraded and low,
And'death is preferred to his abyss of woel
Merciful Goal in thy goodness, save
Thine own imago from a drunkard's grave.
MY FRIEND'S REVEN GK.
OONCIiUDED.
"And now for your weapon," said tho
professor, opening a oloset and produc?
ing a sword. I have the n ?usure of tho
Austrian's sword; this ono is the exact
length. "
The sword at a cursory glance looked
a yery unpromising weapon with which
to defend a man's life. My friend evi?
dently thought so, for he examined it
with a dismayed look.
."Why," said he, "it's hardly moro
than a lark spit; the Austrian uses a K??
nigsberg blade, double the weight mid
width of this toy."
"Iknow it; but this toy, ns you term
it," surveying the weapon fondly from
heel to point, *^ias qualities that in
proper hands will prove more than a
match for the best sword ever forged in
Germany. It is a real Seville blado-no?
thing better in tho world. "See," plac?
ing it lengthwise on his Anger, "how
admirably it is balanced; notico the hilt,
cross-tmrred and crossed-no fear of
wounds on the sword hand; then, its
temper," severing a large nail on which
breast-plates were hung. "Look again,"
pressing tho point against the wall till it
met the hilt, when releasing the weapon,
the blade instantly returned to its nor?
mal condition. "And this last," striking
the blade on the flat of tho anvil with all
his force, "there, that alone is a test
whioh I defy even the famed K?nigsberg
sword to undergo. Enough for this
night. Como early to-morrow for your
lessons."
When we quitted tho professor, tho
doctor obtained a promise for me that I
should not leave Milan until the result
of the duel was determined, and that I
would accompany him to the field.
I saw little of my friend except in the
evening-he was engaged elsewhere-I
did not ask in what direction. I surmised
he was with his f enoing master. Ho never
alluded to the approaching duel-his
conversation was tranquil and on general
topics; the affray at the theatre had,
however, been bruited about the city
every one knew the duel was to come
off, but no ono knew precisely when or
where.
We were about to part one night when
he said, quietly:
"To-morrow morning, at 5 o'olock,
two carriages will bo at the ramparts,
one for myself and second, tho other for
the surgeon and my master, Di Frati.
You will pass muster as a surgeon. Let
mo entreat you to make no objection;
the details have already been finally ar?
ranged. My opponent is provide 1 in a
similar way; he mid his second in ono
carriage, De Liancourt, his teacher, and
a real surgeon in the other. Bo p .me?
lli al."
At 5 o'clock I found myself in tho
carringa with Prof. Di Prati.
The placo of combat was to bo near
Monja-just beyond tho Milan territory
-there were reasons for this which need
not be particularized.
^ The morning was cold aud cheerless,
W and when wo alighted, which was in
[ about two hours, the day hud not bright?
ened. All parties got out of tho car?
riages ; the foes saluted each other brief?
ly. I uoticed the murderous look in thc
Austrian's eyes, and gave up my friend
os lost. Without a word being spoken,
we walked on uutil wo carno to an open
space, smooth, but slippery with tho
morning dew. This was the spot selected
by the seconda, who, apparently, were
quite accustomed to such scenes, went
about their duties in a steady, business?
like manner.
Prof. Di Prati, who had brought his
aword with bim, as he handed it to my
friend, whispered :
"Remember-when I drop my hand?
kerchief-La risposle."
Tho Austrian officer disencumbered
himself of his cloak, and divested him?
self of all his tipper clothing, leaving
his breast nnoovercd. I never saw so
flue a form. Perfectly proportioned on
the largest seule, ho stood upwards ol
six feet high; chest, arms and back bil?
lowy with muscles, ukin ns white as thal
of the fair? dt lady.
My fried, seeing tho fighting eosttinic
adopted by the officer, threw off his blucli
silk vest, as if resolving that ho would
not even have a questionable advantage.
In size he looked a meru dwarf to hr
athletic opponoot; long, thin, wiry arms,
chest narrow, skin almost as dark as ti
mulatto's, and with a greyish tinge,
either thc effect of cold or fear, that, ti
my eyes, appeared tho forerunner ol
doom.
Tho second? having laid down tin
swords with a hilt to eaoh combatant, rc
tired and gave tho signal.
The duelists picked up the swords,
friend at onco betaking himself to tin
new guard.
Tho officer for a moment looked witl
an air of surprise at the attitude, bu
mly for a moment. With a grim smile
he mada WdriVq^^ oro wt
with ? ?1Mb. My -friend had profited by
his lesson; his face was impassive, his
eyea traMuil, his guard, ft?firm aaa rook.
The offloer ruado a foinfc which Wu* dis?
regarded-a thrust which was parried
with tho left. A second foint and a .se?
cond thrust were foiled in the sams way.
Another feint, converted into a real at?
tack, was adroitly baffled. The officer's
color rose-the eyes of tho two professors
woro on him-his reputation and that of
bis teacher were at stake. He changed
his tactics; disengaging suddonly, he
raised his sword and discharged a blow
at tho head with seemingly irresistible
force. My little friend could only avert
tho assault by receiving the sword on tho
forte of his weapon and dropping as low
as possible; so far was the party success?
ful, but tho downward blow, which, in
reality, was only tho atant courier, being
followed by a thrust .meier guard, was
only parried by the rapid uso of tho loft
hand, this time not without doing mis?
chief, for the blood was seen to flow from
tho hand called into requisition. Tho
oflicor, in making this last thrust, owing ,
to the slippery grouud, had given an |
opening, which my friend, in spite of tho j
previous cautions of his instructor, pre
pin ed to take advantage of. Tho circum?
stance was noticed by Di Prati, who
frowned ominously, and muttered, be?
neath his breath:
"If ho break r/uard, he is lost- -bah!
bravo! bravo!'"
Tho words of approval wcro drawn
from him by noticing what had happen?
ed. The last thrust. I have said, broupht
tho officer just barely within runge. By
a dexterous movement of the wrist, tho
paint of my friend's sword was drawn
swiftly across tho officer's chest. The
temper and keenness of tho Moorish
weapon woro clearly proved, for tho touch,
light as it uppeared, laid open tho flesh
and muscles to tho bono, from the left
shoulder sheer across tho breast, causing
a deluge of blood to follow.
The officer, finding himself severely
wounded, became orimson with rage;
curbing his passion, bo propared to exo
cuto tho favorite niunocuvro which, hith?
erto, had proved fatal to his opponents.
Ho advanced on my friend, and making
a strong cross to his sword, put forth his
wouderful strength of wrist.
My attention was called off for a mo?
ment to Di Prati, who drew ont his hand?
kerchief, held it n moment and suddonly
dropped it.
Not a moment too soon. Tho officer
had made his open and delivered a thr.ist
full at the body of my friend, who, hav?
ing seen the handkerchief drop, brought
his left hand again iuto play. This time
t wo fingers fell to the ground. Tho next |
instant, a terrific yell assured mo that
something fatal had occurred. Larispostc]
had been given; my friend's blade was
buried deeply in tho lower part of tho of
fleer's body. Tho officer, instinctively
feeling that the wound was mortal, seized
tho sword with ono baud and shortening
his own, made a desperate longo only to
be warded off by my friend quitting hold
of his sword and leaping back out of dis?
tance. The force of the thrust carried
the oflicor forward, forcing his opponent's
sword into his body up to tho very hilt.
Tho officer cast ono look of mingled
rage and hate at my friend, the last look
on earth, and as he turned convulsively
! ou his back, his eyes closed in death.
