says a Northern capitalist made up his
mind to invest several hundred thousand
dollars in real estate Sn Charleston. All
his prepossessions wore in our favor, and
being a steadfast Republican, our radi?

city, and look about for himself. Soon
after l?a arrival a regular meeting of tho
City Council was held, and onr stranger,

session. The next morning ho picked
np his trunks and went back home. And
this* was at a time when tho City Council
was confining itself to the election of ir?
responsible officers, thc creation of fat
sinecures, and the repeal of obnoxious
ordinances.

PaclfiC'Railway, a few nights ago, n mulo

near town; to bo hanged. Tho rope had
boen placed arorud his neck before start?
ing from tho town, and ho was lcd along
like an cr. to the slaughter; but, arriving
at tho bridge, and while thc hangmen
were fastening tho other cad of tho rope
to tho trestle-work of tho bridge, the
alleged thief Blipped the noose from his
neck, slipped out of the crowd and off
the bridge, and m?de his escape. Forty
or fifty shots were fired at him, but he
was unhurt.
Qne Capt. Herbert won a remarkable
laW'snit in Adair County, Iowa, thc other
day-a suit conducted on both sides of
the North River. Tho plointill" and his
lawyer lived on oue side of tho river, and
the defendant, his lawyer aud the magis?
trate on the other. The parties met. on
either bauk of the swollen stream. The
"court" took his seat on a damp log, and
for ono hour and n half the attorneys
slung law aud logic across a hundred feet
of September freshet, at the expirutiou
of which period, the court mounted a
stump and hurled his decision across the
stream.
A COTTON RING. - "A rumor has gained
ground," says tho Baltimore Gazette,
"that undismayed by the rcceut gold
panic, in which so many 'rings' weut to
'tamal smash,' a 'cotton riug' is being
formed in New York, to bear tho staple
down to eighteen or twenty cents, when
large purchases will bo made, with the
anticipation of realizing thirty cents per
pound iu June next. There may no
truth in the report, though it is circum?
stantially stated; but to be forewarned is
forearmed, and the initiatory movements
of tho proposed cotton liug may be rea?
dily detected."

undisturbed for one year, after which
the administration will have tho public
debt well in hand, so that a material re?

A Georgia paper, speaking of the ex?
penses of the carpet-bag Legislature,
says that "if wo dance, wo suppose wo
must pay the fiddler." Another paper
suggests that if they wouldn't import
tho fiddlers so far, they wouldn't be so
costly.
The editor of a Lock Haven (Pa.) pa?
per advertises for a boy. Ho wants to be
careful. An editor ont Wost tried that,
aud the first thing he kuow his wifo pre?
sented him with twins, all boys. You
can't bo too careful.
The new Governor of Virginia is said
to be less complaisant than his predeces?
sor, and persistently refuses to grant
pardons.
Gen. danby refused to allow per diem
to the members of the Legislature dur?
ing tho recent recess, on tho ground of
tho depleted condition of the treasury.
