MY FRIEND'S REVENGE.
In the early dissolution of the Eng?
lish Parliament in 184-, by releasing
xne from editorial labors, enabled me to
accept the invitation of our Italian spe?
cial correspondent to visit Milan. I
knew nothing of my invitor beyond the
oirouinstances, first, of having been
warmly recommended by parties high
in the world of continental politics, and
next of bis sustaining these recommen?
dations by a series of vigorous articles
full of early information relativo to
Italian movements-the revolntion was
then in progresa-fall of unreserved de?
nunciation against Austrian and priestly
domination, and equally fall of hopeful
anticipations of what then appeared to
most British politicians to bo a mere
geographical expression, the "unifica?
tion of Italy."
The character of his contributions
were fiery, martial, uncompromising,
and led me to idealizo the contributor ns
of gitautio proportions. My astonish?
ment waa genuine, when I saw that he
was a man of puny proportions, with
nothing.in his externals to lead you to
suppose that his veins were filled with
aught but milk of human kindness-I
take it'for granted there is such a liquid
-except a pair of dark eyes that occa?
sionally glittered like a rattle-snake's.
A week passed pleasantly. My host,
though known to me as Dr. Doris, in re?
ality was one of the Milanese nobility;
the piazza D-, in the Corso, was his
ancestral mansion, lot oat for economical
reasons to tho Austrian general who
commanded at Milan. Dr. Doris, to use
an inelegant but expressive phrase, "was
back and edge" Italian. Filled with un?
concealed aspirations from a foreign
yoke, and working strenuously with pen
to that end, he was a marked mau, moro
on account of high connections, which,
although denuded of their once splendid
patrimony and power, still carried a cer?
tain sway.
My week having ended, I prepared to
take leave of my friend, and I invited
him to a farewell dinner at his favorite
cafe, named Marengo. Tho dinner was
good, the wine excellent, and my friend,
who spoke English wonderfully well,
opened his heart unreservedly, as not
being understood, even should a spy bo
lounging within ear-shot.
After this we went to tho magnificent
theatre-La Scala. It was more than
commonly orowded in consequence of a
new candidate for the position of prima
donna. My friend's box was ou the se?
cond tier; we made our way up the stone
stair-case with some difficulty; here our
further progress was impeded by the
narrow passage being filled with people,
looking for accommodation, and in par?
ticular by an officer in Austrian uniform,
whom I immediately recognized as a
great duelist, against whom my friend
enterteined rather unfrieudly views. In
order to pass, it was necessary for my
friend to touch the officer's elbow, which
he did with perfect politeness, and par
den Monsieur, (the Italians and Austrians
of the better class usually spoke French.)
the only response to which was by tho
officer squaring his hugo frame still more
unocoommodatingly. My friend made a
Bocond effort, this time attempting with
gentle forco to push himself between the
officer and the balustrade. Tho officer
looked around supercilious ly, and pressed
his arm so rudely against my friend ns to
thrust him against the wall. My friend,
for a man just vowed forever to peace,
looking strangely warlike, made a sudden
effort, bent down the officer's arm, and
passed him rapidly, in doing which he
trod, I fear intentionally, on the officer's
feet, a compliment which was returned
by a vigorous kiok from tho officer's
heavy military boot.
The pain and public indignity drew
from my friend a sharp, wolli sh suarl;
indeed, for tho moment, ho resembled
nothing so much as a wolf, with his lips
tightly drawn back, and his gleaming
teeth exposed, when, springing at his as?
sailant, he clutched his ample whiskers
with one band, and with tho other buf
futtert him iu tho face repeatedly. Tho
attack was executed with such rapidity
that the officer had no timo to take mea?
sures for tho defence of his person; but
when the blows rained on bis face, and
tho blood flowed, ho becumo perfectly
mad with rage. Ile stamped furiously,
and with a deep oath, ho seized my friend
in his sinewy arms, and hold him ns easi?
ly as a cat would hold a mouse; ho then
backed down tho passage until ho caine
to the opening, when lifting him high in
the air, ho prepared to daub him on the
marble floor beneath, which must have
resulted in frightful mutilation or instant
dentb. But his purposo was frustrated
by tho spectators, myself among the
number, throwing themselves on him,
and, after a sovere struggle, rescued the
little doctor from, his grip. Tho guard,
attracted by tho turmoil, made their ap?
pearance, and for thc present, further
hostilities were impossible. I lost sight
of my friend for a few minutes; he then
rejoiuod me, and having lamented tho
unlucky encounter that had unexpectedly
marred our entertainment, proffered me
bis poss, which I declined, and then
solioitcd mo to return to tho cafo and
wait for him. I acceded to his request.

and having ordered a claret oap well iced,
sat for some time meditating on the
probable issue- of the event.

and addressing mo, said: "I must beg of
you a personal favor-to prolong your
stay in Milan for a week. You have seen
me kicked," looking like a demon, "yos,
kicked by the hoof of a German pig. You
must witness the mode in which I shall
cancel the debt."
"I think you have already pretty well
balanced matters," I replied. "If the
Austrian used his foot,. you repaid tho
obligation amply by spoiling his hand?
some face with your fists."
"The stain of a kick is only effaced
with blood. Everything is arranged for
a mooting next week. It can't tako pince
earlier, as the Austrian is still under ar?
rest for his last duel. To-night, I must
see my old fencing-master, DiPrati; will
you come?"
I consented, and accompanied my
friend to the back of the Duomo, where
the salle de ?rms of tho famous professor
was situated, once crowded with students,
but latterly deserted for the rooms of a
rival professor, Do Laincourt, the teach?
er of tho Austrian officer, the fire-eater
of Milan.
Tho hail wns hung round with foils,
breast-plutcs, masks, and all tho usual
furniture of a placo where assaults both
with sharps and blunts were customary.
The professor was a tall, grey-whisker?
ed mun, of martial aspect, with arms
bated to tho elbow, displaying a mass of
muscles seemingly as tough as cat-gut.
"You aro too Into, Count," said ho,
looking nt my friend. "Play has been
over this hour."
"It is not play, it is something serious
I come to you about. This way; old
friend, and let mo explain."
They retired to a distant part of thc
room, and my friend, in a few words,
stu'ed what had occurred.
Tho professor's face woro a look of
concern.
"Tho Austrian will insist on a duel
d'outrance, I fear."
"My unalterable determination is that
it shall bo so. I have a week to get
np in my fencing; will you take me in
hand?"
"Why como to me? Your challenger
has already killed two of my host \m
?ils, and brought discredit on my school,
ou should rather seek instruction from
my rival, Do Laincourt, his teacher."
"I prefer to como to you."
