Meeting him at Dry G rovo, the gentleman. Mr. Wells, on whom the pistol waa drawn, inflicted punishment on ois assailant with a whip. That night (Saturday) a body of forty or fifty armed radicals (negroes) organized a mob and visited several houses in tho neighbor? hood, searching f?T Wells, Bud telling the females of the families that if they didn't reveal his whereabouts they would cut their throats and burn tho housc6 over their dead bodies. In their ma? rauding expedition, we are informed they visited the house of an old and peaceable citizen of the community, Mr. Collins, aged seventy years, breaking his skull. Ilia ROU retaliated by shooting tho mur? derer, and was himself killed or badly wounded. Tho next day (Sunday) tho mob continued its depredations, and among other outrages, Backed two stores at Dry Grove. In the meantime tho alarm hod beon given, and the white men of tho neigh? borhood colleoted for defence, and started to arrest the proceedings of the marau? ders. They wcro ambushed by tho rad? icals, and fired into. Ono of tho num? ber was killed and two wounded. They killed two of the rioters, and tho others took to the woods. Between twelve and one. o'clock yesterday, a detachment of soldiers was sent to tho woods. All of this might have been avoided if the military oommander had promptly heeded the appeals of tho citizens of Dry Grove, when a messenger came up Sun? day night and mode a statement to him of the Condition of affairs. He was told that the statement must bo made in writ? ing, and he went off to do this. Upon his return he was informed that General Ames had gone to bed, and that ho could not see him until morning. Early in tho morning he called upon tho military oommnnder and was told that tho ofllco hours began at niuo o'clock, and no busi? ness could or would bo transacted until that hour.-Jackson Clarion, 19/A. DEATH OF THE EABL OP DKRBY.-Tho Earl of Derby, one of tho most promi? nent parliamentary leaders iu England, as well as one of the most distinguished statesmen of-Great Britain, has ceased to live. Ho was the fourteenth Earl of tho house of Stanley of Derby, and proved himself, during an active, busy life, nud in very eveutful moments of the history of his country, a worthy representative of his brilliant-almost royal-lineage and ouoestry, which runs back to tho moment of tho landing of the Conqueror -chivalrous, impetuous, high-toned, consistent according to his convictions, and generous. Ho was born in 1779, passed creditably through Oxford, aud never since, proved recreant to the scho? lastic tastes which received their foster? ing impulse in that ancient scat of learn? ing. Ho entered tho House of Commons in 1921. After long servico as Cabinet Minister, he became Premier in 1852, aud again in 1866. Lord Derby owned vast estates in Ireland, and it is a very note? worthy remembrance, and particularly illastrativo of tho actualities of what is known us tho land question in that coun? try, that, notwithstanding his strict tory ism, his "Arms act," his "anti-Irish" legislation aud the fact that ho had fallet) uuder the political ban of thc greatest of Irish agitators, who ranked him as tho "Scorpion Stanley," so excellent and kindly was his oonrso as a landlord, that he could have walked over his property in Tipperary-tho worst of counties in the calendar of agrarian outrage, at any timo or season unattended, unarmed and saluted willi respect at all points.
