Carr, tho postmaster, received *k heavy
sealed document at his office post-mark -
ed '.Vienna," and directed to "Herr
Carl von Veehter, Galesburg, Kuox
County, Slate of TUinoi8, United States
of North Arno icu." Knowing that the
massive letter mast bo of im por tau co
from ita crested seals and general official
appearance, ho despatched Mr. William
Post, ehiet derk of the office, in soarcb
of tho Herr von Veehter. Mr. Post
made diligent inquiry of several, but
could not find any traco of tho individual
wanted, until he mot with Mr. Johu
Loos, tho well-known saloon-keeper ou
the East sido of tho square. Mr. Loos
know a Charley Veehter; ho waa working
on tho new hotel building, nnd both
walked over there, whero they found
Veehter about to ascend a ladder with
a hod on his shoulder. Wh<?n Mr. Post
hauded him tho letter, nnd he read it,
tho delight of tho hud mun kuow no
bounds. He threw his hod-ful of brick
away, and embraced Mr. Loos, culling
him his dearest friend. Tho letter con?
tained a draft for $7,000 on the First
National Bank of Chicago, and ho insist?
ed on paying Mr. PostSGOOfor being thc
bearer of such joyful tidings as tho doon

This morning, Herr von Veehter, ar?
rayed in a suit of fashionable clothing,
and having passed through the bauds of
the barber, called at our oflico iu com?
pany with Captain Henry Heinrich, an
attache of the Free Press establishment.
No ono could recognize in tho nublo
looking personage before us the ex-hod
carrier. His manly and commanding1
appearance attracted general attention
and remark, aud tho caso and suavity of :
his manners were truly remarkable. Ho !
clearly and succinctly related to us thc
eventful chain of incident.', in his cureer,
which terminated in his carrying a hod
in Galesburg. In thc yenr 1857, Herr
von Veehter (beiug theu nineteen years
old and of a noble family) entered thc
Austrian army as lieutenant, and through
regular graduations, in 18(10 rose to tho
rank of major. lu tho mouth of Sep?
tember of that year he wes insulted ut a
loveo by tho colonel of his regiment.
Proud and high-spirited, he resented the
insult, aud a challenge was passed be?
tween tho two officers. They met (pis?
tols at ten puces) and the colonel fell. !
With great difficulty Veehter eluded tho
authorities! and ut length escaped to 1
England. There he remained but ii
short time, and buding no suitable em
ploymeut, ho embarked for tho United
States, and upon bis arrival proceeded to
Chicago. Ho arrived beru tho day the
intelligence of the fall of Fort Sumter
flashed through tho couutry, und his
means being nearly exhausted, ho eu list?
ed in tho Ninth Illinois, then being or?
ganized. The man who had worn tho
epaulets of aa Austrian oflicer for more
than three years, carried a musket in the
ranks of that battalion, and wns severely j
wounded at tho battlo of Pittsburg Lund- ?
ing. When ho was mustered out ho ob?
tained employment of various kinds,
and endured many vicissitudes incident
to the lot of a laboring man. Ho fenrcd
to write to his relatives, aa tho Austrian
Government might leam his wherea?
bouts, and cause his apprehension under
the extradition treaty, and so he suffered
and toiled ia silence, until finally he
found himself in Galesburg, carrying a
hod on the new hotel.
The packet ho received yesterdny con?
tained a full pardon, under tho sign
manual of tho Emperor. The colonel
had only boen severely wounded, and
freely acknowledged that ho alono had
been ia fault, and that tho duel had been
of his own seeking. By tho death of his
uncle, von V. inherits a rich estate aud
tho title of Baron.
