'The cont oat has been so close in Penn?
sylvania and Ohio, that the result in both
States is somewhat doubtful, und nothing
short of the foll official returns seems
likely to ont it entirely beyond dispute.
If the Republicans have carried one of
those States', or both, it is by majorities
so slight as to make even their snooess a
source of discouragement aud humilia?
tion. Considering how largo their ma
I'o ri ties in thoBO States were last year, and
.ow very small they must bo this year,
if they have oarried the States at all,
they have reason to ask themselves how
many stich victories they can stand and
ojcapo total annihilation? Gen. Grant's
majority in Pennsylvania was 28,898, and
in Ohio, 40,61T. And now, if his party |
is not beaten in both States, it has es?
caped "by ibo skin of its teeth."
. Tho enormous patronage of the Fede?
ral Government is a potent influence in
all elections, and that influence has been
wielded by tho Republicans. If neither
party liad been aided by it, nobody oan
doubt shat Ohio and Pennsylvania would
haye been carried by the Democrats, on
Tuesday, by handsome majorities. But
if tho Federal patronage had been on the
Democratic side, as it was on the Repub?
lican Bide, the Democratic majorities
'would' have been prodigious and tri
umphont,
lt would bo preposterdus for General
Grant to claim these elections as an in?
dorsement of his administration. Last
fal!, before he bad- been tried, when the
people expressed their hopes and antici?
pations, his majorities in Pennsylvania
and' Ohio were such os he could reasons- '
bly be proud of. But this year, after a
brief trial of his administration, the
great flush of confidence has so far abat?
ed, that nothing but tho patronage ho
wields has saved him from a heavy re?
buke. The great majorities by which he
was elected have been very nearly if not
quite effacod, ,*
These elections have decided tho fate
of the fifteenth amendment-tho leading
measure of the Republican party. Penn?
sylvania having already ratified the
amendment, the result in that State could
have no offeot on its success. But the
election of a Democratic House in Ohio
extinguishes any chane j of a ratification
of the amendment in that Stete ; und so
many States are wanting to mako np the
requisite three-fourths, that tho Republi?
cans can no longer entertain uuy hopo of
carrying tho amendment.
These elections, even if there has been
a small majority against us, illastrate the
indomitable energy, pluck, and hopeful?
ness of the Democratic party. Though
badly beuton in the Presidential election,
the party was not demoralized. It "bates
no jot of heart or hope." So far from
being cowed or discouraged, it entered
into the contest this year with unsub?
dued vigor and spirit, and nothing but
the Federal patronage prevented its win?
ning a great victory over its opponents.
A party which rises after defeat with
Buou irrepressible elasticity, aud in the
very next contest reduced adverse majo?
rities of 30,000 or 40,000 to almost no?
thing, may feel a reasonable pride in its
strength, aud unfaltering coniidenco in
its destiny.
It the comparative strength of the Re?
publicans is as much reduced in New
York as it hos beou in Pennsylvania and
Ohio, the Democratic party will narry the
State next month by at least lo?.000 ma?

reported that they have combined in the
Tennesseo Legislature to defeat him for
tho Senate, aud that they may possibly
defeut him. Wo hope not. Johnson
would bo a valuable acquisition to the
Senate. He would mako tho fur fly from
the backs of the radical leaders and im?
peachers as he made it fly from the flanks
of the Soothorn lire-eaters in 1860- 01.
He would wako up the conscript fathers,
and keop them dancing. We should
have a lively time, and a regular shaking
up of tho dry bones of tho Senate, with
Andy Johnson on tho floor, and so we j
hope he will bo elected. He is tho man i
of all men for Senator from Tennessee.

feat of Pendleton in Ohio as fatal to his
chances for the Democratic nominnti
for the Presidency in 1872. It says this
defeat leaves Now York, with her man
Hoffman, master of the field, and that
tho coming November election in New
York will establish tho Democratic
supremacy of the Empire State through
the decisivo voto of Now York city.
Thus, says tho Harald, the olection ni
Ohio leaves the National Democracy in
tho hands of Tammany Hull, which con?
trols New Yolk city.
Never at any time during tho lost eight
years has the gold room displayed the
moribund features which it shows at pre?
sent. If it be not dead, it certainly looks
ghastly enough for death. Tho specula?
tors have deserted its noisy nod dingy
precincts. Tho hundreds of excited and I
roaring operators, wbo, from morning
till night, for years past, havo confrontad
eaoh other around tho "fountain," have
disappeared, and only a few sombre
brokers aro to be seen.
