DEAR Sui: ? bave bad the honor to re? ceive your invitation to attend, as an honorary member cf tho Commercial Convention, to assemble at Louisville, on the 12th of October next. The impor? tant measures proposed to bo considered by the Convention, will attract tho earn? est attention of the whole country, nud, I feel assured, will receive the calm de? liberation which so momentous a subject as the advancement of the interests of nil the States and the development of the wealth nnd resources of each require from American citizens. If wo turn to the past history of the country and com? pare our material condition with that of our forefathers, when they undertook, in the face of the difficulties which sur? rounded them, its organization and es? tablishment, it would seem to be an easy task for us to revive what may be do 1Dressed, and to encourage what may bo anguishing, in all the walks of life. Wo shall find it easy, if we will oherish the same principles and practice tho same virtues which governed them. Every man, however, must do his part in this great work. He must carry into tho ad? ministration of his affairs industry, fide? lity, and economy, aud apply tho know? ledge taught by science, to tho promo? tion of agriculture, manufactures, and all industrial pursuits. As individuals pros? per, communities become rich, and tho avenues and depots required by trade and co m merco will, be readily construct? ed. In my particular sphere, I have to attend to my proper business, whioh oc? cupies so much of my attention that I have but little time to devote to other things. I am unable, therefore, to accept your kind invitation, but am happy in the belief that the enlightened delegates that will be present at the Convention, will do all that oau be done for the good of the country. Blanton Duncan, Chairman of Com? mittee of Arrangements. DR. J. MARION SIMMS.-The New York correspondent of the Charleston Courier says: It is. reported that Dr. J. Marion Simms, formerly of one of our upper Districts, has just returned from Europe, bringing with him additional testimonials of his great success among the magnates of the continent, especially in France, where he is said to have achieved the most astonishing successes, and become, in consequence, the favorite of princes and royal ladies. His specialty in medi? cal art, he has brought to a degree of perfection which leaves him immeasura? bly ahead of all competitors in the same departments. I take for granted that these successes have not been unaccom? panied by substantial rewards of merit, and, it is understood, that Prof. Simms is quite as wealthy as famous. You will remember that he transmitted quite a large donation from Europe, for tho be? nefit of tho sufferers by the war, in his native District. Dr. Simms is a native of Lancaster, and it was to the poor of this County that he, about three years ago, made a large donation for their relief. CLARENDON AND EUROPEAN WAR.-The Earl of Clarendon, British Secretary of ? State for Foreign Affairs, has been mal; ing a speech. On the topic of pence and war in Enrope, he said: "I have been for some time on the con? tinent, aud I returned last week. I had there tho opportunity of collecting opi? nions, and I have seen there some per? sons who exercise no little influence on tho dostinies of Europe, (an evident al? lusion to his interviews with Napoleon,) and although I have not tho gift of pro? phecy, though I do not protend to soo further into futurity than other men, yet I cannot help, on this occasion, express? ing my belief that at no timo witbiu tho last three years-at no time sinco tho war between Prussia aud Austria-have we had n fairer prospect of maintaining tho inestimable blessings of peace."
