holders, who run the institution with a
view to profit to themselves, and for the

Not long since, areliuble contraband
an innocent cause of the lato war-an
everlasting nigger, yonng in years, po?
lite in manner, courteous in demeanor,
shining in face, lithe in limbs, nblo in
stomach, and curly in hair, applied to
the managers of the Leroy Academy
for a seat on one of the benches of that
institution, and a chance to drink from
tho spring of learning supposed to flow

tend the academy at Leroy, if a nigger
was to be used as a black-board therein.
They held several meetings to cuss and
discuss, to pro and con, to talk and talk
over, and at lost decided that no nigger
could sit within the walls of that insti?
tution, and to relieve themselves from
the dilemma they were in, raised amoug
the managers of tho academy seventy
five dollars, and sent the aforesaid dusky
descendant of the irrepressible conflict
to Oberlin, with instructions to apply
the balance, over and above the cost of
his trip, to making of himself a good
and useful citizen, and a stump orator
for and in behalf of Republican poli?
tics, parties and principles generally.
The only ones of all tho Leroy Acade?
my who were in favor of this young mun
attending Behool, were Democrats; while
not a.single Republican, nor the family
of a single manager, would consent to
this block man attending sohool there.
Verily, the love our Republican friends
hate for the negro is marvelous! They
think very much cf them while working
in the cotton fields of the South, or vot?
ing in a distant State for. Republican
principles; bot when a worthy young
black man applies at the door of n col?
lege in st Northern State, asking to be
admitted and to be given the means to
make a livelihood, the door is shut in his
.face, and he is bid hie himself to other
parte.

THE Quo WARBANTO CASES.-It is with
unfeigned pleasure that we publish be?
low the judgments of ouster against P.
J. Ooogan, Moses Camplin, M. Caulfield
and George Addison, together with the
reasons of the Chief Justice for tho
same. Those men nssnmed that they
were duly elected to hold the offices of
City Assessor, Assistant Assessor, Flour
Inspector and City Sheriff. The rightful
holders refused to surrender their offices,
and they w?r? ejected by force. What?
ever may be the political opinions of thc
Chief Justice, he, in this instance, de?
serves our thanks for asserting the dig?
nity of the law, in spite of party clamor ,
and party prejudice. Before he accepted
his present position he was a member of
a bench whose boost it was that not ono
of its members had ever been sullied by
ouy unworthy act. No portion of their
ermine had ever boon stained; no spot
hod ever marred their judicial character,
and whatevtr Judge Moses, or any other
Judge, may do to restore the dignity of
the bondi and the majesty of the law,
will always meet, not only our approval,
but also the approval of all good men.
We commend to nil men who are dis?
posed to adopt revolutionary measures
in this State, to read the opinions below
given. If they do so, they will find thut
there are still in South Carolina, crushed
and humbled os ehe is, Judges who oro
bravo enough to administer the law, and
to hold with even hand tho scales of jus?
tice.- Cliarleston Courier.
Es-Senator Hendricks is on the Ohio
stump for Pendleton, and is showing up
Gov. Morton on the black suffrage ques?
tion. Onlv three or four years ago Mor?
ton strongly and publicly opposed giving
the ballot to tho negro. Morton's friends
apologize for him by saying that he has
"elasticity enough to change an opinion
when convinced that it is on untenable
one." The Chicago Times says that "the
elasticity which changos opinions when
they become unpopular has flooded the
country with d?magogues. In intellect
and political management, Morton is at
the head of these, He has more brains
and less conscience than Ben. Butler."
Lucas, the lion-tamor, has died of the
mastication he got by tho jaws of his
floroe pets. It seems strange to read that
the salary for whieh he risked and lost
his lifo waa three dollars a day.

we gave an account of the pursuit, cap?
ture anti imprisonment of Jim Gilmer,'
the most daring rogue tlint ever figured
iu North Mississippi or West Tennessee.
The jailer at Purdy, deeming the jail in?
secure* and under orders from Judge
Hurst, attempted to remove Gilmer to
Nashville for safe keeping, and rumor
States that whilst being conveyed to his
lestinalion, his guard was overpowered,
and Gilmer riddled with balls fired by
unknown parties, clad in the costume of
the ghostly Klan. A gentleman told us
that he saw Gilmor's body at Corinth,
nnd'thnt there were five bullet holes in
the back of the neck. Tho body was in
charge of Gilmer's brother, to whom it
had been delivered according ta his re?
quest. It is also stated that, anticipat?
ing death on tho outset of his journey,
he had given specific directions in regard
to the disposition of his money, clothes
and other valuables. At the time of his
death, requisitions for Gilmer from three
States were in the hands of the military
authorities at Corinth; and in addition to
his other acts of villainy, it is said he is
a successful polygamist, having six living
wives. Altogether his life was one of ro?
mance, daring and great wickedness, and
his "cutting off' will not bo regretted by
any lover of order and peace.

of Internal Revenue lins decided that
6weet potatoes must be regarded as
grain. He was led to this conclusion by
reasou of the fact that in Virginia, whis?
key is made of sweet potatoes. Now,
under a provision of tho law, stills dis?
tilling from fruit are exempt, or subject
to a lower tax than manufactories mak?
ing whiskey from graiu. In order that
a tax may bo wrung from the distillers
who evade tho provisions of the internal
revenuo law by using sweet potatoes, a
decision is obtained that they are graiu.
Everybody else has supposed that they
were either fruit or vegetables.
The safe of tho great jewelry store
nnder the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New
York, occupied by Bishop Az Kein, was
broken open nt a late hour on Monday
evening, and over $30,000 in diamond
jewelry was stolen. No trace of the
thieves nor of the property has been dis?
covered, aud the detectives are at their
wit's ends how to account for the rob?
bery.
JOHNSON VS. GRANT.-According to
Mr. Delano, the indebtedness of tho Go?
vernment has been reduced $1,100,000,
000 since the close of tho war. Of this
vast sum. Mr. Boutwell only claims for
Grant 850,000,000; so that Andrew John?
son must be credited with 51,050,000,000.
A fashion authority states that the
fashion for coats this fall will bo a good j
deal like that of last fall, especially with
those who have to wear last fall's coats.
A Paris letter states that Louis Napo?
leon has fixed upon March IC, 1870, as
tho time of his abdication. The Prince
Imperial will be fifteen years old then.
At Mount Ararat, this year, 110,000
Mohammedan pilgrims assembled for tho
annual journey to Meoca.
