storm: Monday sight was tremendous.
The tidal wave flooded the lour grounds.
Thousands ol cattle were destroyed. The
dykes on the marshes are all gone. The
bridges ? throughout the country have
been destroyed. The damage to this
small parish is estimated at $1,000,000.
BANGOS, MB., October 7.-A letter
from the telegraph manager at Calais,
Mo., says: "We are in a terrible state
hero. The lines, both ways, are flat on
the ground and covered with trees and
buildings. The damage to vessels and
buildings is very great. East port is re?
ported to have been nearly demolished.
The water in the Penobscot has risen to
the high spring mark. The booms are
broken and millions of feet of logs have
gone by the city. A large gang of men
having been sent down after them, it is
hoped that most of them will be picked
up. ?'
NBW YOBK, October 7.-The Tribune

Eldridge's friends will favor delay, as

RICHMOND, October 7.-The Legisla?
ture adjourned, after reading tho Go?
vernor's message. The Governor, in his
message, expressed his conviction that
the Legislature would ratify the fifteenth
amendment voluntarily, and even if it
were not a requisite to admission. He
recommended the appointment at this
session of the standing committees, in
view of the fact that our educational and
judiciary system must be remodeled and
placed in harmony with the Constitution;
and that internal improvement demands
the gravest consideration.

At Stockholmn, Sweden, when a sewer

A German lady in Chioago claims to
have the largest pearl in the world. It is
said to be oval, about two inches long,

Mrs. Myra Bradwell, of Chicago, who
edits a law journal there, is about to be
admitted to the bar. She will praotice
law in partnership with her husband.
Only fifteen dollars for a divorce in
Chicago, and yet some men go to State
Prison for wife-murder.
