entrance of a servant, bearing the card
of Major Hunter, who was waiting in

she read the name, and entered his pre?
sence after a short. time, with eyes
around which-notwithstanding nume?
rous np plications. of rose water-tracee
of tears were still visible. The Major
rose with a oomplacent smile and com?
plimentary greeting, but Mrs. Stevens !
was in no mood for flattery, as he had
tact enongh to perceive.
"At what time shall I call for you?"
he inquired, as conversation began to
flag.
Ohl how she longed to excuse herself,
and refuse to attend, but pride, our om?
nipresent enemy, rose np in arms, and
with apparent nonchalance she appointed
the hour.
"Mrs. Stevens," began the Major, in
low, earnest tones, "you appear sad
harassed. Exente my seeming imperti?
nence, for when one has but few friends,
he is apt to discover any signs, however
slight, serving to indicate their unhappi?
ness."
His voioe had assumed a slightly senti?
mental tone, which grated unpleasantly
on Mrs. Stevens'ears, and she looked up
in amazement as he continued :
'.Since my withdrawal from the army,
I have met you often, and tho emotion
which compelled me to seek an introduc?
tion at our first meeting has not grown
cool in the many weeks of our acquaint?
ance; and although I have not been as?
sured of a reciprocity of sentiment, your

Stevens emerged from tho bay window,
where, innocent of any eaves-dropping
intention, ho had retreated to meditate
upon the unkind words of his girlish
wife.
She sprang to his sido with a glad cry.
Putting one hand proteotingly on her
shoulder, ho turned to her unwelcome
visitor.
"Now, sir, before you leave"-for tho
valiant officer, with a stifled curse, was
about to beat a retreat-"let mo warn
you never to speak disparagingly of my
wife. So sure as one word of slander
oonoerning this affair reaches my ears,
just so sure are you horse-whipped pub?
licly through every street in tho town,
and a certain portion of yonr life, as yet
unrevealed to yonr admirers in this sec?
tion of the country, entirely exposed.

The Major slunk away like a whipped
our, and Mary crept, sobbing, into her
husband's arms. Their reconciliation
was complete; but never since has Mrs.
Stevens experienced the least desire to
accept admiration, attention or kind?
ness contrary to her lawful protector's
wished.

quantity of Snper-Phosphato of Lime found in tho best average Manures heretofore offered for

tilizers, while the Manures contain twice as much fertilizing material; they are in fact much
cheaper to the consumer. They aro offered on tho market in, two forme, with a guarantee
that thc material in each will correspond to tho advertisement.
ETIWAN, No. 1.-Solublo Phosphato, containining from oighteen to tweuty-flve per cent, of
Pure Solublo Phosphate of Lime, and furnished at sixty dollars per top.
ETIWAN, No. 2.-Peruvian Super-Phosphate, containing from sixteen to twenty per cent, of
Solublo Phosphate, and two to four per cent, of Ammonia, at seventy dollars per ton; for ap?
proved acceptances, bearing interest, or such other security as may be acceptable to tho sub
agents. Orders to bo forwarded immediately to tho Agents, and delivery made as directed on
