The Department of Agricultaro fur?
nishes a summary of the crop report. A
statement ia given showing the mean
temperature and rain-fall of the several
States for Joly and August, as contrasted
with those months last year. The re
fian most subject to drought-that
(fast, of thc Mississippi and Missouri
has had the most'.regular supply of rain,
and tho valley of the former has had an
abundant rain-fall to its mouth, while
Alabama and Georgia have Buffered from
drought, and the Atlantic States, in a
still higher degree, not only throughout
the tide-wafer region, but in a large por?
tion, of .the Baste rn States. On the
Southern Ailantio sea-board the heat has
been greater this year than in 1868, and
the nun-fall leas. North and East of
New York, the heat has been less, and
also the rain-fall. In the one case, it
was toO hot, and in the other too cold
for corn and other summer crops, which
Buffered accordingly. While the drought
has prevailed.,East of . the Alloghanica,
the great Mrssifisjpoi^ basin has li aol un
unusual amount of Vain. . WestVirginia
and Ohio alone, Of the central area, had
leas rain-fail in August than in 1868. Tho
excessive moisture of the summer is sus?
tained to its close, especially in Wiscon?
sin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas,
and Missouri. Both the' early and - the
latter rains have been somewhat extraor?
dinary Wast - of the Missouri, yet the
high temperature and deep thirsty soils
of that region have converted the visita?
tion into a . blessing. . The drought of
the sea-board has not been equalled in
many years. ? The comparison between
this year and last, shows that New Eng?
land has had but one-third as much rain
in August of the present year, Nsw
York a little more than one-half, New
Jersey scarcely one-eighth, Pennsylvania
one-sixth, Maryland one-ninth. Extracts
from correspondence will show tho inju?
rious effects of the excessive drought
on carn,'cotton, and garden vegetables.
COHN.-The corn crop has been the
prey of numerous ills in every section ol
the country. The only States that now
show an average condition aro Nebraska,
Kansas, Florido, Louisiana, Texas and
Arkansas. Excessive rains retarded
planting and necessitated replanting in
the spring 1 ?hrbnghout ' the West and
South. Cold : wet weather prevented ti
healthy vigorous growth in almost ever}
State, and in tho season of earing anc
maturing, a serious drought affected ii
on tho ? Atlantic coast, with injnrioui
heat in the South' and unfavorable reduc
tion-of temperature in the North. It
deep soils, naturally drained, the ex

jury. In heavy or flat lands with claj
