We are free to confess that the Demo?
cratic organization, North and South, is
not in full accord. The situation is very
differ ont, and hence the issues in the
contest are not alike. Lu the North,
they have a free ballot, and the Demo?
cracy Can make the fight on an equal
footing with their radical opponents; and
hence, they oppose the adoption of the
fifteenth amendment, favor a reduction
of the taxes, oppose class legislation, and
contend for an equal distribution of the
burdens of tho Government. In thc
South, they are making the struggle foi
the ballot which has been taken fron
them. This is the leading idea witl
them", and hence it is all their energies
tend iu this direction, and for the pre
sent they are holding iii abeyance tin
distinctive issues that go to make up tin
canvass in the North. In a short time
we are inclined to believe, these dif
ference8 will be happily adjusted, um
the Democratic party North nnd South

will march steadily on to victory.

not to see before their toes and noses.
So, hero is how the Constitution dismisses '
its orities:
"We have never urged the Southern
people to abandon their affiliations with
the Democratic porty. We have said
some plain things about Democracy, but
we still cling to it. These old party hacks
cannot understand how a fearless, inde
dendent, truthful journal eau bravely
own up party errors, and honestly urge
party cleansing, and yet be true to the
principles and faith of a party. Their
indefensible notion about party manage?
ment is, that a man must praise its blun?
ders and defend its mistakes, and hence |
become the champion of folly and error.
Onr notion is, that a journal muBt mould
party to right, and, therefore, inoreaso
its power and enhance its influence.
Error is a source of weakness, and must
lead to ultimate defeat. Bad manage?
ment can't be rectified by sticking to it.
We want to go into the next campaign
against radicalism to achieve success,
and we are for putting Democracy in
fighting plight."
