Thu present General Assembly, however? witti a lively appreciation of the advantages. derived by other States from the possession of full reports of their agricultural resources and produc? tions, created a Bureau of Statistics, which is now being organized, and will hereafter supply a deficiency that has lately become more and more manifest, as nuder tho Operation of tho free labor system we advance steadily to ? condition of permanent prosperity. A few weeks official experience as Commissioner of that Bureau has already acquainted me with a multitude of facts which would long since have largely contributed to attract the labor and capital which have recently gravitated hitherward, had they been opportunely and properly brought to publio attention. Scarcely one*fourth of the land in this State hos ever been tilled, and.the resi? due now lies in orignal forests. Such of it as has been improved, even by the almost primitive system of agriculture heretofore prevailing in South Carolina, has yielded harvests which, in general, compare favorably with the most prolific lands of the West, and in many caset far surpass them, in variety and abund? ance of their prodcotions. Over IOC bushels of oorn and 00 bushels of wheal have, with ordinary cultivation, fre quently been made to an acre in thi< State, and there are instances, since thc close of the war, where, by good plough? ing and a moderate use of manure, SOC bushels of corn have been gathered ir the same area. Under my persona observation 212 bushels were made ot one acre, -within the corporate limits o: this city last season, on land that cat hardly pe classed ordinary, and yet it ii confidently expeoted that the sumo soi will, with the employment of u littli more care, yield a third larger crop. Prior to ?S60, our average harvest pe acre, according to the official reports o the United States, was 600 pounds o cotton, 25 bushels of wheat, -10 bushel of barley, 40 bushels of rice, 100 bushel of Irish, And 300bushels. ni sweet pots toes; and this despito the carelessness o slave-labor, the lack'of improved agri cultural implements, the parsimoniou use of manures, and many other disad vantages of a similar character. FAXBW^BE UP AHD DOINI?]-The State Agricultural and Me? chanical Society, with commendable spirit, have determined to hold tboir sixth annual lair in Columbia, on the 10th, 11th and 12th of November next. The im? portance of this effort to revive a lively interest in nil the industries calculated to accelerate the material progress of our SUte, oannot be too highly estimated. Every South Carolinian should trike a personal pride in the movement, und see to it that this first attempt to encourage the development of our resources, after so long a season of prostration, suffering and depression, is crowned with suc? cess. The society have issued a list of premiums, covering a wide scope of in? dustries and productions, which they trust will excite many new minds to en? gage in a generous rivalry to be first in their several spheres of action. But while the individual may be moved by mere personal interest, the influence of this movement must surely affect our Communities, and they, too, should be alive to tho success of this first fair in our State since the war. Columbia-, with commendable zeal, hus done much to in? sure this, and we hopo that Charleston, with her interests so largely hanging on the prosperity of our State, will not bo backward in giving her cordial co-opera? tion. If her factors, merchants and me? chanics, whose energies aro equal to any requirement, will but bestir themselves aud lend a helping hand, tho plans of the society will assuredly bo carried out iu a manner to do credit to South Caro? lina and her people. - Charleston Hews. A party of fanatics made a night attack upon the foreign settlement of Hiago, for the purpose of exterminat? ing the foreigners, but tho people were aroused in time to repel and rout tho na? tives. A memorial against Christianity has been presented to the Japanese Government by three priests of high rank. A case of murder and two of lynohiug occurred hist week in Portage City, Wis. On Thursday, one Spain shot a young man named Britt, killing him in? stantly. A mob immediately seized Spain and hanged him to a tree. The same evening a party of men wearing masks took Patrick Wildick from tho Portage City jail, where he was confined for highway robbory, and summarily de? spatched him by hanging. The senior editor of tbe New Orleans Picayune, on his return from a two j months' stay in the North and East, re? marks that "with public opinion nt the North fur moro tolerant than ever be? fore, with an earnest disposition to carry capital to tho South rather than take it away, and with a bountiful crop insuring independence at homo, we may all bc hopeful.
