PROGRESSING.-The work on the first
pier of the Charlotte, Columbia and Au?

with satisfactory rapidity. A couple of
steam pomps are in operation, exhaust?
ing the waler: from reith in ibo. dam, or
rather confining it to such a level as will
allow the work to proceed without seri?

derrick is rapidly swinging into position

forja the base of the pier. The first or
foundation tier has been almost com?

rise above the line of water, when pro?

A Card-Southern Life Insurance Com?
pany, Atlast? Department.
2b the People of South Carolina :
Tho above Company was organized in 18G6,
in consequence of tho wholesale forfeituro of
Southern policies by Northern companies. Tho
unparalleled SUCCOBB of tho enterprise has
forced several of theso companies to restore
their Southern policies, from tho fact that they
could not operate in our midst without tho ap?
pearance of honesty.
We keep all our money at homo to build up
our impoverished country-every dollar of
premium being safely invested in tho State
from which it is derived. Tho institution is
purely Southern, and hence Bhould appeal
with great force to tho patriotism and sympa?
thy of every Southern heart.
'Tis not our purpose to make war on other
companies, but to exhibit tho special advan?
tages offered by this purely Southern Compa?
ny-founded on patriotism and solid wealth.
ItB ratio of as?ete to liabilities-the truo test
of a company's strength, is second to nono on
this continent-being nearly 300 to ICO.
Whenever and wherever wo have presented
the claims of this Company, it has not only
enlisted the sympathies of our people, but ha?
also secured their hearty co-operation. We
have secured 500 policios in Soxth Carolina
since tho 10th of February. Wo number
among our Directors Gen. Wade Hampton and
Col. Wm. Johnston, gentlemen well known to
every citizen of South Carolina. We appeal
personally to tho people of South Carolina to
assist in pushing forward this deservedly
popular Southeru institution?
