BOSTON, September 18.-The Daily
Advertiser learns from a gentleman j ott
arrived from Martha's Vineyard, that a
party of Gay Head Indians went off, yes?
terday, to a steamer, two miles from the
landing, and found her to be an iron-olad
war vessel, carrying eighteen steel guns.
They fraternized with tho steward of the
steamer, and on reaching shore, sported
that she was a Cuban privateer. They
saw between decks a large body of men;
the steward saying there were 300. The
steward also said her armor plating was
four inches thick. A large schooner was
lying alongside; the steamer meanwhile
throwing off a largo volume of smoke, as
y(jf to conceal tho schooner. Tho steamer
is supposed to be 5,000 tons.
