At a meeting of the Survivor's Associ?
ation, Charleston^ District, th,e following
preamble and resolutions were adopted:
Whereas, tho ovonts of the late war be?
tween the Confederate and United States
of America aro now fresh in the minds ol
its survivors, and many records do now
exist which time and noglect will certainly
destroy, it, is highly desirable to havo
these records and these recollect ions put
in each substantial form as to resist tho
ravages of time; and, whereas, we bavo
no government which will collect and
preserve the history of those transactions
of which AV o are proud, it is, therefore,
the duty of all South Carolinians to place
the history of the lato war in its truo light
before the world, in order that those who
fqught and died for thoir country may
have not only the reward of their distin?
guished patriotism, but the justice which
their achievements deserve; and, whereas,
the Survivors* Association of any singlo
district may do much in collecting and
preserving these records, yet because of
the intimate association existing during
the wat between nil the troops of the
State, thc work- will become proportion?

be invited to send five delegates to a
convenci?n, to meet at our hall, iu
Charleston; on Thursday, November 18,
1869, to form a State survivors' associa?
tion, for the purpose set forth in the
next resolution.
That the primary objeot of thc pro?
posed State Survivor's Association is the
preservation of all matters of history
connocted with the late war.
That the proposed means of accom?
plishing this object is the establishment
of a State Bureau, under the control of
the State Association, where all original
matter 'shall be regularly and conve?
niently ? filed . away for the reference of
such persons as the Association may seo

WEALTH AND TKADE OP THE SOUTH.
The Charleston Netts predicts that for
18G9 the cotton States "will show more
true prosperity than any other section of
the world." lt goes on to estimate the
crop of cotton for the present year,
which it fixes at 3,000,000 bales. Tho
average vaine of all the crops will
amount to 86-4 per head of tho popula?
tion. The News also predicts that South
Carolina will yield products this year
worth $50,000,000, or an average of
874.62 per head in a population of 670,
000. If the necessary means to insure
accuracy in this statement have boon em?
ployed, this affords a subject, of great
congratulation to South Carolina, which
only a few years ago was apparently
ruined.. Another remarkable fact is
mentioned, by the same journal: "There
are now no lesa than 200,000 whites cul?
tivating cotton witb their own bands."
This probably refers more ernecially to
cotton growing on' the uplands. In the
old days of slavery the fact might have
told as an argument against that institu?
tion, but now that the negroes are free, the
white map. cultivating cotton ia certainly
a dangerous competitor of the blacks. It
may be added that while in all the near
South there is such distress from short?
ening of crops by the drought, the mer?
chants, planters and others arriving here
from the far South-tho cotton region
especially-are most cheerful, and aro
much encouraged by the success of and
prices for thoir great product.
