watt terrible bl?Vtdtn? President','whose

deceased was. Years ago at Galena, be?
fore the war, Rawlins' was tbe man above

There waS^W'particular intimacy be?

soldier, an'honest adviser-a gentleman
strangely in .eohrtraat' with many bf his
adviseW-'-A'mah' of mind ?sense, nerve,
genius; and comprehensive ability. As
e came to, know his great worth he
learned to'lover him, but could not be at
the b?dtHd? df lij? dying friend.
Rawlins was the' power "behind Grant's
tent in tim? of war. His w?s the genius
thafhelped plan, and by attention to de?
tails helped win great victories. Grant
without ' Rawlins would have been the
sun without power to warm the heart of
"great ideas" into life. As one of the
eminent gentlemen Who stood by the
bedside ol the1 dying mah; said-"the
soul of Grant's Gabi net is gone." 1
And for this tho country bas double
cause to mourn the death nf General
John A. ' Rawlins, n patriot, an honest
man, a gentleman.
'. " \Neto: 'York Democrat.
Cornmodoro Vanderbilt ought to be
tho happiest man on earth. He has a
young and beautiful- wifo and a fortune
of $70,000,000, abd to render his felicity
complete, an immense work of art bas
been erected in bia honor on the Western
wall.of the Hudson River Railroad in
the city of New York. It consists of an
immense bronze statue of the Commodore
placed in the centre of a colossal bas
relief, which is contrived to illustrate the
career and achievements of the Commo?
dore, to represent the great inventions
of this century, and to portray allegori?
cally the growth of the Republic. It
coVers an arena of 3,125 square feet,
measures 150 feet in a straight line, and
31 feet in extreme height; weighs nearly
100,000 pounds, and cost over half a
million or dollars. But beautiful wives,
millions of money, and colossal bronze
statues are not always happiness. To
the bachelor who earns his daily bread
by the sweat of Iiis brow, this may neem
incredible; but we are told it is true,
nevertheless.
A commission is abont to proceed to
some of the {Southern States for the in?
vestigation of certain pension claims,
chiefly of negroes, said to have been
prooured through an extensive system
of frauds. No doubt the frauds were
perpetrated by white men, and for their
own benefit, the negroes being used,
probably with their consent nnd for a
trifling compensation, as mere tools and
instruments. '.

To the People of South Carolina
Tho abovo Company was organized in 18G6,
in consequence of tho wholesale forfeiture of
Southern policies by Northern companies. Tho
unparalleled Emccess of tho enterprise has
forced several of these companies to rest?te
their Southern policies, from the fact that they
could not operate in our midst without tho ap
pearance of honesty.
We keep all oar money at home to build up
our impoverished country-avery dollar of
premium being safely invested ia the State
from which lt is derived. Thc institution is
purely Southern, and hence should appeal
with great force to tho patriotism and sympa?
thy of every Southern heart.
'Tis^not our purpose to make war on other
companies, but to exhibit tho special advan?
tages offered by this purely Southern Compa?
ny-founded on patriotism and solid wealth.
Its ratio of assets to liabilities-the true test
of a company's strength, ia second to none on
this continent-being nearly 300 to ICO.
Whenever and wherever we have presented
the claims of thia Company, it has not only
enlisted thc sympathies of our people, but has
also secured their hearty co-operation. We
have secured 500 policios in Soxth Carolina
since tho 10th of February. We number
among our Directors Gen. Wado Hampton and
Col. Wm. Johnston, gentlemen well known to
every citizen of South Carolina. Wo appeal
personally to the people of South Carolina to
assist in pushing forward this deservedly
popular Southern institution.
J. H. MILLEU.
