Mr. Jefferson Dav?B thus: "Mr. Jerffer
8ou Davis is the lion of Glasgow and its
vicinity inst now. himself and party hav?
ing established themselves in that city,
and made BO vc ral excursions in the
neighborhood.' On "Wednesday, en
route to Glasgow, they passed through
Dunfermline, and visited the Abbey
Church and ruins. Mr. Davis then paid
a visit to Stirling, and left for Outlander
in the evening. The news soon spread
that the ex-president was in the town,
aad as he left per train in tho evening
three hearty 'cheers wur o given hythe
large ooncouree of people congregated
on the platform. Mr. Davis afterwards
visited Dollar. At Glasgow he visited
the Exchange, where, in expectation of
a visit, there was. a crowded attendance.
The assemblage opened a passage in the
centre of the hall, np to whioh Mr. Da?
vis walked? and at the end of the room
entered his name in the visitors' hook.
On leaving the building. Mr. Davis was
loudly cheered. The shipbuilding yard
of the Messrs. Napier & Gowan was also
visited, after which the party returned
to the residence of Mr. Smith, Bonvue,
Dowanhill. On Thursday, Mr. Davis
with Dr.. Charles Mackay, left Glas
fow fer Oban. Mr. Smith and a nam?
er bi friends accompanied him some
distance down the Clyde. On leaving
tile Broomielaw quay, where there was a
large concourse of persons, Mr. Davis
was followed by load cheeers, whioh he
acknowledged by raising his hat and
bowing repeatedly. A similar demon?
stration was accorded him. at Greenock,
Dunoon, Innelian, Boothesay and Tigh?
nabruaich, the crowds were assembled at
the different piers exhibiting an eager
desire to have a sight of the famous ex
President of the Southern States."
ROAD DUST AND VEGETATION.-No
careful observer will deny that the trees
along mach frequented roads, especially
when exposed to th? influence of pre?
vailing winds, distinguish themselves in
the rapidity?of their growth and the
luxuriance of their foliage as being more
thriving than those of the neighboring
wood. This fact is being ascribed to the
dust from tho roads which is carried aud
deposited by tho wind upon their
branches and foliage. Dry road dust
contains from eight to ten per cent, of
organic matter, arising from the excre?
ments of animals, from straw, hay, or
grains which may have fallen from
wagons frequenting the road. After
having been pnlverized by carriage
wheels to a fine dust, they form a large
amount of already decomposed and
readily soluble nourishment for vegeta?
ble growth. Roads kept in good condi?
tion ore, therefore, not only important
promoters of the civilization of the dis?
trict wherein they are located on account
of easier, transportation, but also of an
inexpensive but not less eGieien t fertilizer.
It is in such, at the first, unapparent
causes that an explanation of many of
tile declared mysteries of vegetation may
